I had to recreate a 65 page document from a photocopy of a word processed document. After scanning in the document I let the software do its stuff with defaults. It was ok but it tries to form headers and footers and tables in word, dividing the doc into sections etc. Very clever but a bit over the top for me. So I told the software just to create a text document output which I could then put into word. Brilliant, excellent, first rate. Not one error. Every word perfectly created. Even corrected incorrect spellings in the original. I then formatted the document in word using all the nice new styles and finished up with a document far better than the original. I used OCR many years ago when it was about 80 % accurate. This product has moved on leaps and bounds making OCR a real solution.

Why didn't I buy this before? I got the free FineReader Sprint with an Epson scanner years ago, and found it very useful. I hadn't made the connection that this could be a lot more useful.
Finereader Sprint does OCR on pictures you import from the scanner. It does a pretty good job, and actually seems to work with any scanner.
But Finereader Pro is a different beast altogether! You can change the order of pages and add pages by re-scanning if they haven't come out right, and you can improve the accuracy by making corrections on what it thinks it read (very useful if there is handwriting that you want to OCR, it didn't OCR, so you can type it in by hand and it is still searchable in the saved PDF).
Then you want to OCR some pictures. It accepts pictures from my smartphone camera (just about manages a single page of newsprint - a double page spread is too low resolution for the small text), and pictures already on disk. It takes the contents of electronic faxes (faxes converted to TIFF) and you can drag and drop a PDF onto Finereader and it will OCR. The searchable PDFs it creates are much smaller than the original photos or faxes, at least in my experience.
I write a lot of Tender Responses for a couple of businesses I support. TO be able to bundle up just about every sort of documentation that the client wants to see into highly compressed, searchable, yet very clear PDFs is outstanding. To be able to take someone's badly scanned Business Continuity Plan - 14 pages (one file per page) of 2MB GIF files - and drop them straight into Finereader (by drag and drop straight from the email - don't even have to save them first), and have Finereader output a 300k PDF with 14 pages all neatly arranged and searchable but otherwise true to the original is a life saver. I bought another copy for one business immediately and they scan the stuff they need to keep, so even if it is "put somewhere safe", they can find the electronic copy. They already have the double-sided high speed scanner (which costs around £1800) so that's a saving - I use a Brother MFC-5890CN Network Ready A3 Colour Inkjet Multifunction Printer with fax which only does single sided but will scan A3 or two pages of a magazine/ manual.

Compared to my previous OCR package, which came free with a scanner; this is remarkably accurate with typed text, even with relatively low resolution images, and is quite easy to use.
It does not always capture the images and layout exactly, so some post editing may be necessary, but if the main objective is to transcribe the text, this works remarkably well.
