Outstanding OCR Accuracy and Format Retention

ABBYY FineReader 10 lets you accurately turn paper documents and images into fully-formatted electronic files for easy editing, adapting, archiving and sharing. The application delivers superior recognition accuracy and format retention even on documents and images which are typically difficult for OCR. Such as, faxes, digital photographs, legal documents, documents with long tables, barcodes, multiple and complex image items (e.g. magazine pages) and many more. It allows you to digitize your paper documents and dramatically optimize the process with literally no retyping and reformatting.

Intelligent Reconstruction of Complex Document Structure and Formatting

ABBYY’s unique Adaptive Document Recognition Technology (ADRT) analyzes the entire multipage document and precisely reconstructs it with original layout, style and formatting attributes across all pages. By intelligently “seeing” the document in its entirety, the program identifies various elements of document structure and reconstructs them as native Microsoft Office formatting elements. Based on the 2nd generation of ADRT technology, ABBYY FineReader 10 intelligently re-creates the most complex formatting attributes, such as:

  • New Heading hierarchic structure
  • New Table of contents (with formatting and linking)
  • Enhanced Footnotes
  • Enhanced Fonts and styles
  • Headers and footers
  • Page numbering
  • Captions to images / tables / diagrams
ABBYY FineReader also accurately re-creates in the output file a range of additional formatting elements including line numbering, signatures and stamps that can be found in legal and other documents.

Recognition of Digital Camera and Mobile Phone Camera Images

FineReader was the first document conversion application that has introduced digital camera OCR capabilities. With its already 3rd generation of ABBYY Camera OCR technology, FineReader recognizes photos of documents captured with digital camera and mobile phones. It intelligently identifies photographed documents and applies its recognition technology for camera images to ensure the best OCR results. ABBYY FineReader gives you wider possibilities to capture documents and turn them into useful electronic files even when the usual scanning can’t be applied, for example, when you are on the go. The program automatically adjusts digital photos before recognition and provides a wide range of image pre-processing functions and tools:

  • New Automatic correction of 3D perspective distortions
  • New ISO noise correction
  • New Blurred image correction
  • New Trapezium crop tool
  • Automated Resolution Detection and Correction
  • Document orientation detection
  • Image deskewing
  • Image despeckling
  • Line straightening
  • Image inverting and rotating tools
  • Dual page splitting tool

Comprehensive Language Support

ABBYY FineReader 10 is the only OCR solution which “reads” text in as much as 186 languages including a variety of Latin and Cyrillic languages, Greek, Armenian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Hebrew, and Korean. The latest version of FineReader includes dictionaries with spell-check capabilities for 39 languages and supports the integration with Microsoft Word custom dictionary to accurately recognize user specific terms. FineReader 10 simplifies the OCR process by converting documents with automatic identification of appropriate language(s) and allows you to work with multilingual documents with any language combination.

The ABBYY FineReader’s interface comes with pre-programmed “Quick Tasks” which include all the key OCR and document conversion tasks grouped into intuitive menu functions, according to the output format. Quick Tasks allow you to quickly select the required task and get the converted file with just a mouse click. The automated Quick Tasks dramatically reduce amount of steps typically required to process a document and helps to increase productivity. With ABBYY FineReader 10, you can also define your own frequently used tasks using the Automation Manager.

Complete Integration with Popular Office Applications

When converting documents, ABBYY FineReader 10 exports the results directly to your favorite applications including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader. In addition, recognized text can be saved in a variety of file formats, including PDF, PDF/A, HTML, Microsoft Word XML, DOC/DOCX, RTF, XLS/ XLSX, PPTX, CSV and TXT. You can also launch ABBYY FineReader from within Microsoft Office applications, scan a paper document or open document image, convert image to text and put the recognized text into the document you are currently working on without leaving the application.

PDF Conversion, Archiving and Securing

ABBYY FineReader is a professional and versatile tool for working with PDF files. Its key PDF conversion functions and features include:

  • Enhanced: Saving to PDF with MRC compression Enhanced The application allows you to decrease the size of an output PDF file up to 10 times compared to the original, while the visual quality of the image stays intact. This option is ideal for PDF archiving and sharing.
  • Saving to Searchable PDF FineReader keeps the text information as a separate layer from the image (text under image), making it available for search and retrieval.
  • Saving to PDF/A* for long-term archiving.
  • PDF for Web Publishing and Tagged PDF All PDF files created in FineReader are optimized for publishing on the Web. In addition, with ABBYY FineReader you can create tagged PDF files optimized for handheld devices and screen-reader devices.

All the key document conversion tasks have been carefully singled out and grouped according to the output format into the extended Quick Tasks menu to reduce amount of steps usually required to process a document. As a result, all you need to do to have your document converted is just to select the required task and press the button.

Barcode Recognition

ABBYY FineReader 10 reads both 1-D and 2-D barcodes. It recognizes a barcode and displays its value.

High Speed Multicore Processing

With its intelligent and powerful conversion algorithms, FineReader leverages the full potential of multicore processors to recognize multipage documents with maximum efficiency. The processing is divided and executed in parallel and helps to streamline business workflow and increase processing speed. This feature is especially useful for high-volume document conversion.

Had to ring the help line twice in order to link FineReader with MS Word. On doing some copying I found that the date format had been changed to the American format i.e. 08-20-2010 instead of 20-08-2010. I tried the help desk, (which I think is in Germany), but we appear to have difficulties in translation and I have given up and reverted to ScanSoft omni page pro.

I first bought Finereader Pro 5.0, with the Cyrillic option, after abandoning Omnipage. Rumour had it that it was developed by the KGB! It certainly did a good job on Cyrillic. I've bought every version since. FR8 was probably the best up to that point, and was a solid piece of software. The improvements in OCR quality were mostly incremental.

Finereader 9 was a considerable improvement on English OCR -- a step change. But the user interface was degraded somewhat. For instance, in FR8, as you scanned each page, the new page image was displayed on-screen. That meant you could see at once if there was a problem with the scan of the last page, and you could stop and fix it. In FR9 they decided to keep you stuck on page 1. You didn't change page unless you clicked on the thumbnail for the next page. This was really very unpleasant.

Finereader 10 is another step in the same direction. I don't think the OCR is markedly better, in the way it was from FR8 to 9; more incremental. But the user interface is worse still.

One essential in every OCR package is to display the text onscreen so you can proof it. For that purpose, the text has to be broken up by line, so that it matches the layout on page. When you export to Word or whatever, of course, you want those line breaks to disappear; but not until then. Just try finding dodgy text if you can't see where the line ends are!

Every version of Finereader up to and including FR9 understands this. Not FR10! It just runs all the text together in a window on-screen. It's hopeless to proof the text in.

And remember the "stuck on page 1" problem, introduced in FR9? Well in FR10 they've made it worse yet! They open a modal dialog box onscreen during the scan, so you CANNOT change page, not even manually.

I've ended up with FR8, FR9 and FR10 on my system. I tend to scan in the stuff under FR8, and edit the page images in that. FR8 does that better than any subsequent version. It also allows me to scan at 400 dpi; the same scanner is not allowed to do so in FR9 or 10! Somehow Abbyy's designers have decided to enforce something that the scanner does not! I keep FR9 because it handles colour better than FR8, and because the OCR is better. I have FR10 because... um... well... because I always upgrade. Oh yes; and it exports PDF's much better than FR9 does.

It's sad to see a good product going downhill. But the underlying engine is superb, at least for English.

Not quite certain that it is as good as it was for French. I had a funny experience this evening with some very clear 600 dpi pages, which were worse in FR10 than FR9. Mind you, I find FR9 is certainly better than FR8 on the same images!

I have used FineReader version 8.0, 9.0 and now 10.0 This is a real upgrade and so easy and 'intutive' to use. I edit our Church Magazine and time and again FineReader has proved a life saver for me. People still hand me pieces of paper with their art work or article on. As we now produce the magazine `digitally' hardcopy is no longer of any use, but a few moments with the scanner and a very accurate result with no trouble and a good piece of editable text or artwork. FineReader 10 Professional is a great product for a competitive price.
