Format:Audio CD
Cliff Bennett's EMI years have been reasonably well served over the years. All of his albums with the Rebel Rousers and his "Band" have been given CD outings and there are three useful compilations (of which this is one)that give an adequate overview of this distinctive R&B band's career. However while the "Abbey Road" set is probably the slickest of the bunch, that includes 4 previously unreleased tracks and a handsome (but not terribly informative) booklet, Bennett fans will still be knotted up with some frustration. This is partly because of the non inclusion of material from the Joe Meek produced sessions but mainly because his EP and B-side material has not had any significant release, unlike so many of his EMI counterparts. And it's obviously too much to hope that the post Toe Fat early to mid 70s recordings will get a much desired CD issue. Never mind, what we have here is a precisely mixed collection of album tracks, hit singles (2 to be pedantic)and spectacular misses that satisfyingly sketches out the recording history of one of the UK''s most interesting beat combos. The Rebel Rousers were every bit as able to rise to the challenge of responding to Bennett's instinctive and powerful vocal that possibly only the Stones could have had the tenacity and accomplishment to match them. Newcomers, though, will find it hard to distinguish Bennett's approach from any of the fifty or so blue eyed soulsters that have graced both sides of the Atlantic over the past 40 years, but to practised ears Bennett had working class grit and chops that set him apart from so many of the "strain'ard" school of singing at that time.
For the record this set includes "Got to get you into my life"; "One way love" and versions of "Strange feeling", "Ain't nobody home", "You're the one for me" (brilliantly done) "Good times", "Hold on I'm coming". Record companies please heed! Cliff Bennett & the Rebel Rousers deserve the same kind of respectful and extensive re-issues we are accustomed to from Georgie Fame; Geno Washington; Chris Farlowe; etc. Get Back in the Vaults!

The history of pop music is full of injustices, but one of them is that Cliff Bennett only has two UK top ten hits to his credit, these being a cover of One-way love (Drifters) and Got to get you into my life, which Paul McCartney wrote especially for Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers. The Beatles also recorded the song and their version can be found on the Revolver album. Between the two top ten hits, there was one minor UK hit - I'll take you home (another Drifters cover), which is not included here.
Despite that modest chart history, Cliff's music is seen as an integral part of the British sixties music scene, possibly on the strength of his live performances. This compilation represents the best of his music. Most of the tracks here are covers of American songs so it is no surprise that Cliff made no impact in America. On the other hand, most of the Americans whose songs appear on this collection had far less success in Britain than in America.
On this collection, you will find covers of Always (a fascinating re-working of the old Irving Berlin classic), Another Saturday night (Sam Cooke), Who's cheating who (Little Milton), I can't stand it (Soul sisters), Good times (Easybeats), I take what I want (Sam and Dave), Roadrunner (Bo Diddley), When something is wrong with my baby (Sam and Dave), Ain't love good ain't love proud (Jimmy James and the vagabonds) and many others.
Some people are wary of cover versions, but Cliff was brilliant at them. Other British R+B bands of the time, such as the Animals and the Spencer Davis Group, gained wider recognition, especially in America, but Cliff's music is just as good as theirs.

I saw Cliff Bennett along with The Manfreds and Alan Price a month or so ago at the Cliffs Pavillion, Westcliff. He sang his two U.K. hits "One Way Love" and "Got To Get You Into My Life" as well as other songs. After the show Cliff signed my L.P. cover "Drivin' You Wild" an album I've had for forty five years. Cliff's voice is as strong as ever and his performance is still wonderfully exuberant. Just great! This C.D. "Cliff Bennett at Abbey Road 1963 to 1969" is not a comprehensive look at Cliff's work dring this period. It includes the two U.K. hits, four unreleased tracks and other recordings taken from L.P.s and extended plays. It is more like a sampler for the four disc "Into Our Lives. The EMI Years 1961 to 1969" This C.D. needed a couple of Cliff's earlier recordings from 1961 such as Jerry Lee Lewis' "When I Get Paid" and "That's What I Said". Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers were one of the great British bands of the late 1950's and early 1960's who tried not compromise their work and showed a resistance to the softning of Rock and Roll. If you have just discovered Cliff after seeing him in concert it is well worth buying this C.D. However, if you are already a fan I would go for the four disc set.
