Intelligent, objective, precise, disciplined: distant, unemotional, intellectual, clinical. The pros and cons of Claudio Abbado in performance. This economically priced triple-set of reissues makes a fitting memorial purchase, focusing on short pieces and mainly Italian repertoire. The three albums come in cardboard LP-style sleeves with recording details and critical reception quoted. Abbado keeps firm control and is a sure guide to the dances, overtures and choruses.

These three CD's are very recorded. The Brahms Hungarian Dances gave a wide range of sound from the very loud to the utmost pianissimo. The music is enchanting and Abbado brought the best out of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The Rossini Overtures with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe brought forth a sense of anticipation and excitement, especially the William Tell Overture. CD3 consisted of choruses from Verdi and the best of these were the three pieces from Verdi's Requiem. Good value and testament of good music.

Easy Listening with a Great Conductor 25 May 2014
By Claudia Etheridge - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
If you like to listen - at least part of the time - to some light classical works for which you do not need to reserve one hour or so without interruptions, while doing nothing but concentrating on the music, you will like this collection by the great Italian conductor Claudio Abbado (1933-2014).
The collection - released as a set in 2014 - consists of three previously published CD’s which include:

- Verdi’s opera choruses - with the “Coro e Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala di Milano“. Original version released in 1975. These are choruses from ten operas, and from the Requiem, some of them very well known, for example, “The Triumphal March“, from Aida; “Va Pensiero“, from Nabucco (which almost became the national anthem of Italy); “Vedi le Fosche“, from Il Trovatore, and many others.
- Brahms’ Hungarian Dances - with the “Wiener Philharmoniker“. Original version released in 1983. These are eighteen dances which Brahms arranged, and three which he composed, for piano and which were later orchestrated by various composers.
- Rossini’s overtures - with the “Chamber Orchestra of Europe“. Original version released in 1991. These are overtures to seven operas by the composer, namely, Il Barbiere di Siviglia (which we all know from the Elmer Fudd cartoon), Semiraminde, L’Italiana in Algeri, Guglielmo Tell, La Cenerentola, La Scala di Seta and La Gazza Ladra.

Most dances and choruses last from 2 to 4 minutes, occasionally more. The overtures are longer, 6 to 12 minutes..
Each piece - a masterpiece in itself - is sufficiently short, to allow you to stop the music without losing much of your concentration, if the telephone rings, if you are in other ways interrupted. You can easily go back to the beginning again.
During his long career, Claudio Abbado was music director of La Scala Opera House in Milan and of the Vienna State Opera. He was also principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and principal guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was made Senator by the Italian government in 2013.
The collection may be viewed as a small token of appreciation to an eminent musician who recently (January 20) passed away.
