Product Description

About the Author

Jean Pierre de Caussade (1675-1751) was a French Jesuit priest and writer known for his work Abandonment to Divine Providence (also translated as The Sacrament of the Present Moment) and his posthumously-published letters of instruction to the Nuns of the Visitation at Nancy, where he was spiritual director from 1733-1740, although he continued to write the sisters after leaving Nancy. While he is best known for his work with the sisters, he also spent years as preacher in southern and central France, as a college rector (at Perpignan and at Albi), and as the director of theological students at the Jesuit house in Toulouse. Caussade is remembered for, among other things, his belief that the present moment is a sacrament from God and that self-abandonment to it and its needs is a holy state - a belief which, at first glance, would appear to be heretical relative to Catholic dogma. In fact, because of this fear (especially with the Church's condemnation of the Quietist movement), Caussade's instructions to the sisters were kept unpublished until 1861, and even then they were edited (by fellow Jesuit Henri Ramière) to protect them from charges of Quietism. A more authoritative version of these notes was published only in 1966. It is clear in his writings that he is aware of the Quietists and that he rejects their perspective. Writers such as Alan Watts have found in Caussade an Occidental, Christian-theological analogue to the Eastern religion of Mahayana Buddhism, particularly Zen Buddhism. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

A modern edition of a spiritual classic. Not easy to read but worth the effort.

Experiencing God 27 April 2010
By Janyce P. Jones - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
There was a British radio program in the 1980's that ran a questionnaire to it's listeners. "If you were on a desert island and could only take three books...one being The Complete work of Shakespeare, one being the Bible, what would the other book be?" It was reported that 80% of the listeners said "Abandonment to Divine Providence"...the text from which this translation is taken. I was personally pastored through Andrew Murray's writings for fifteen years and believe no one could outwrite him on the Christian experience. That was true until I read de Caussade's letters. His grasp of our relationship with God is stunning.

Beautiful, inspiring, realistic treatise on the spiritual life 20 Aug. 2012
By M. OBrien - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This little book is beautiful, inspiring and very realistic. The author writes simply and movingly, conveying his message eloquently yet in layman's terms.

Given the time and place of his writing, it is very likely that this book was read by St. Therese and her family and influenced her "Little Way."

I highly recommend this to all hoping to grow in the spiritual life. You will be inspired and encouraged to be fully present in every moment and thus more closely united to God's will in your life.

Says "New Editon" but appears to be photocopy of 1921 edition - and bad typos on covers 29 Oct. 2008
By old-writer fan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I bought this "New Edition" of Caussade to get one in modern English. But when the book came it appears to be an exact photocopy of a 1921 version. The type is old looking and the English is not very accessible to modern readers. Moreover, there is a very bad typo on the cover, "...de Caussades hook (book) ..." and another on the back cover ("... solve diffietdties (difficulties) ..."! It is good to have the letters of Caussade which are included in this edition, but I feel cheated.
