1. Dark Star - Harold Budd
2. Abandoned Cities - Harold Budd

Product Description

Originally issued in 1984 on Harold's own label, Cantil, this is perhaps the darkest entry in his voluminous back catalogue with a quasi-industrial element to the sonic palette. Two 20 minute plus tracks that evoke a post-apocalyptic soundworld with heavy synth drone and suspended single piano notes.

For me, 'Abandoned Cities' is a real dark and mysterious masterpiece: achingly lovely emotive melodies of loss and emptiness which reflect the title superbly. This is music you want to hold close to you, and reassure it that all will be well in the end. The only other score which I feel captures that sense of desolation as well, was Ry Cooder's 'Paris, Texas'; but that was a much more stripped-down, spare sound; here it is a richer, deeper, warmer, yet still desolate, black magic. Do you enjoy exploring abandoned places? If you do, let Harold Budd take you down some dark alleyways...

I've been a fan of ambient music for many years now especially Brian Eno. I'm now starting to extend into Harald Budd's back catalogue and this is a great piece of vinyl. I find it relaxing but it drives my wife up the wall! As I said, not for everyone...

Excellent quality reissue 21 Jan. 2014

Beautiful vinyl pressing of an important early Budd album. On CD it was combined with The Serpent In Quicksilver, not because they go well together, I think, but because they're both relatively short albums. Having them individually on vinyl allows you to focus on the albums as separate releases. Abandoned Cities is a darker and starker work than Quicksilver, and bears listening to on its own.
