From the Back Cover

On board a US aircraft carrier en route for the Gulf, an electronic surveillance specialist, nicknamed the Aardvark, is preparing himself for war. Trained to seek out and destroy submarines, he is confused to find himself pitted against an enemy who have no subs.

The air of unreality pervades the ship as its crew, high on patriotism, violence and porn, watch the Gulf approach and begin to wonder whether this really is a war or merely a simulation of one? Are people really getting killed or is it one big video game? What can one man do when the enemy is never seen and death is silent and comes from afar? Welcome to the dark and terrifying absurdities of modern war. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Krackpot Amerika, 29 Mar 2000
By A Customer
If you want a war book read Tom Clancy. This book is about everything crackpot Amerikan as difracted through the prism of the Gulf War. The publisher compares it to Joseph heller but really it's more Don Delillo meets Kurt Vonnegut through a wormhole on the backside of the looking glass. Toss in some Celine and the bastard son of William Burroughs and Jean Baudrillard. Stir well and take in one gulp. The funniest, most sarcastic parody I've read since 'Infinite Jest'. The first FUN ontological novel. Must be read to be believed. AND, {added benefit) reading it will make you smarter. Pray for a movie. That's all I say, just pray for a movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Catch 22 for the 21st century, 24 April 2004
If you see this book, buy it. Told in language that is hypnotic, almoststream of consciousness, this book is as good as any I have read aboutyoung men getting ready to fight. That doesn't mean it's swaggering orpugnacious or combative. It's sad, very funny, very insightful and totallyconvincing. Blinn writes superbly well-- scabrous, bawdy, delicate, sad, outrageous and humane. He knows people and knows how to write to revealthe truth of the emotions beneath the surface armour that most men present to the outside world.
And as a commentary on the absurdities and superficialities of modernAmerican society it's also one of the best I have read.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a word, outstanding!!!, 25 July 2003
I got the book yesterday morning, and finished it 12 hours later just before midnight...I just could'nt put it down. A witty, profane, down-in-the-sand account of one man's trials during his Naval career. With blunt language and bittersweet humor, he vividly recounts the worrying, drinking, joking, lusting and just plain sitting around. This is one of the most cerebral war novels written...I applaud James Blinn's vision and look forward to his next book. This novel would make a remarkable film...here is hoping to see it on the big screen one day!
