Works in Linux 30 Dec 2009
I bought this stick to use with a 64-bit (x86_64) Linux distribution and the 2.6.32 kernel. According to the Linux kernel release notes the driver for this specific model has been built into the kernel since kernel version 2.6.30. However, when I plugged in the stick to my laptop the output from dmesg indicated that a firmware file (dvb-usb-af9015.fw) was missing. Neither the installation guide nor the CD that came with the stick mention Linux, but I googled the name of the missing firmware file and found it on the Web, downloaded it and copied it into the /lib64/firmware/ directory. Then I rebooted and now the stick is detected properly. I have tried it successfully with Tvheadend as a backend and XBMC as a frontend, and it works a treat.

The supplied mini aerial is useless: I had to plug my house external TV aerial into the stick before it was possible to detect any channels when scanning. But it does work very well when this is done.

I'm awarding this stick four stars, rather than five, because a) there was absolutely no mention of Linux in the installation guide or CD; b) there was a missing firmware file which I had to find for myself on the Internet and install (fortunately I knew in which directory I had to put it). However the stick does work well if you know how to set it up in Linux. I have not tried it with Windows.

I don't usually write reviews, but this little tuner impressed me so much that I thought others should know. The set up was childs play, I had loaded it on to my Toshiba NB100 Netbook and was watching TV in minutes, even the little aerial supplied with it looks too small to be serious, but works exceptionally well. I have three portable items, with Freeview on them, the 7" Nextbase TV, the 3.5" August and an Orbit DVD player, and with the exception of the August TV, I was begining to think that Freeview and portable didn't go together, I was wrong, I live in an area where Freeview on a portable aerial is very difficult, it's a case of sliding it around window sills until you get a picture, well not with this little beauty, I can't claim to have got all the channels, for some reason Channel 3 and Channel 5 are not there, but most of the rest are. So if you have a use for one of these and thinking of buying one, I strongly recommend you go for the AVerTV Volar Black HD A850 picture quality can't be beaten. My wife is so impressed although she couldn't understand why I wanted to buy one in the first place, she's ordering one for herself.

This is an excellent product that gives high quality results and is simple to setup. Just want to confirm it works fine with the Irish digital TV (DTT) that is undergoing trials at the moment. I can easily pick up 4 TV channels -- RTE1, RTE2, RTE rolling News, TG4 -- and the RTE digital radio channels with just the included aerial in Co Cork in an area where analogue TV reception is poor to average. However please note you don't get TV3 or any other channels at the moment. The Volar sets up easily in Windows 7 media center and then you get the electronic program guide (EPG) so you can record a program if you wish. As a bonus the included AVerTV 6 application is as good as any bundled software of this type and is probably quicker to use under normal circumstances. Might buy the dual AVer tuner in the future so I can record and watch at the same time. Now we just need a few more Irish TV channels -- ASAP!
