Product Description

Auto Dial Panic Alarm

A great safety product for the disabled or elderly living alone and concerned about falling. The panic alarm is a small pendant. In an emergency the user presses the button and the main unit dials for help. If the fist number is busy or on voice mail it will dial the next pre-programmed number. The user can record their own “help-me” message and 3 telephone numbers can be programmed (neighbour, son or friend for example). When answers hands free two-way conversation is possible.

My father had a fall and it took him a number of hours to crawl to a phone to get help. I priced various similar sounding units which rang a 24x7x365 call centre when a pendant was pressed. Once connected, the in-built speakerphone in the base unit supposedly allowed a two-way conversation many metres from it, and the call centre would decide the best course of action - ring an ambulance, nominated keyholders etc. The services cost £700 to £1300 over 5 years so I decided to try this alarm instead. Quite happy with its basics. You pre-record a message. When the pendant is pressed it rings one of three numbers in turn, plays the message and waits for a keypad response from the phone, for a set period of time. If it gets a response it stops ringing anyone else. If not, it moves on to the next of 3 numbers ringing them all up to 5 times. I haven't tried rented call-centre services so the units they provide may not have the same flaws. Whilst a much cheaper alternative, you need to think if this meets your requirements. For me, we just wanted something that alerted the family that my Dad might be in trouble - and it certainly works for that. However, the built-in microphone is rubbish, and only picks up very muffled voices from up to 3 feet! So don't expect to have a conversation. Second, it's too easy to nudge the button on the pendant and we've had a number of false alarms. We've ended up fashioning a plastic cover which needs to be lifted to press it, no problems since but a basic design flaw I hope they fix on future models. Thirdly, some phones dont seem to produce a keypad response it accepts ; my sister-in-law has changed her mobile to overcome. In our circumstances, very happy with it, in fact prefer that family make a decision about what to do rather than leave it to a call centre, or waste the time of other professionals on false alarms.

Brilliant for the parents, who can rest assured that one of their children will respond to their call for help, even if they cannot reach a phone due to a fall. Great peace of mind for both elderely, and their children

Overall this is a very good concept, however when using the product I experienced a few problems. The remote button only seem to operate in the same room and has difficulty in activating the main panel from other rooms specially if they have solid walls or different floors. Once you press the button the pre-recorded message keeps on playing on the main panel even before it starts to dial the stored numbers. I think the overall quality of the unit(s) has room for improvement.
