This is the fourth Asus motherboard that I have bought and on paper by far the best value. I am very impressed with the layout, build quality and components - there is a lot of space between all the slots and can easily accommodate large dual slot GPUS, most oversized CPU coolers etc Someone has thought all this through very well and the reviews show better or as good overclocking as more expensive Asus or comparable Gigabyte boards.
All very good - but in theory I could not use the Phenom II x4 955BE (c3 stepping) Black edition CPU Amazon sent me (not the c2 stepping advertised). This is because the bios which came with the board bought in December 2009 was only version 0501 (released in July 2009), hardware revision is 1.01g. This only supports the older c2 stepping version of this CPU(box part HDZ955FBK4DGIBOX) - not the newer c3 stepping version(box part HDX955FBK4DGMBOX). For the C3 you need bios version 0605 and hardware revision 1.01g. Alternatively bios version 0704 supports any hardware version. This board is reported not even to boot into bios with lesser versions of the bios with the c3 stepping version of the CPU - so how can you update the bios? It's a catch 22. There are also numerous reports of similar boot up problems with various forms of pc3 12800 ddr3 memory or this memory running at 1333 instead of 1600. Again an upgrade to the latest bios seems the answer as 0501, which currently seems to be the bios being shipped, does not cure the problems. In reality I was able to boot into the bios first time - i took the precaution only putting one stick of memory, Corsair tw3x4g1600c9d, into slot A1 (third slot AWAY from the CPU, blue in colour). I had downloaded and extracted bios version 0704 zip file from the Asus site onto a USB stick and used EZFlash to update the bios successfully. C3 problem solved and I then added the other stick of memory into slot b1 (the blue slot furthest from the CPU - the manual is wrong). As reported the memory did not automatically achieve 1600 at 9-9-9-24 2t 1.8v but I was able to change this in the bios and achieve a nice stable system. In reality the automatic settings of tighter timings 7-7-7-20 at lower frequency, I think 1066, are probably as fast but either way the system has been very stable with no BSOD or freezing as I have seen reported elsewhere. In conclusion another well designed and solid board from Asus. MB temp is 23c idle in a well ventilated Antec 300 case. Right I am going to post this on a few random sites in the hope that it may help some of you out there.........
I have the M4A79XTD EVO motherboard and since day one I had so many problems it made me want to cry. I have built plenty of computers and I tried everything I could think of. I googled, I read forums, I ran memtest, I checked various compatiability issues with Ram and that seems to be the advice given the most but none of this helped me. Finally as a last resort I looked inside my machine and noticed that I had quite a lot of crap in the sata controller, Blue Ray Player, DVD R/W player and an SD card reader and Of course my Hard Drive. I moved the HardDrive off that controller to Sata 5 which seems to be on a seperate controller and hey presto no more blue screens, no more random crashes and no more fiddling with ram timings etc in the vain hope of trying to find some stability. This is an excellent and well priced (though I must admit I didn't buy it from Amazon) board, containing more features than I ever use. For some reason the 8+2 phase power and the anti-surge protection give me added piece of mind as well, even though I also have the computer plugged into a surge protection power strip. The board is nicely laid out and I found it easy to add a large heatsink, graphics card and RAM with large heat spreaders.
I have this coupled with an overlocked AMD Phenom II 550 (Black edition) and 4 gig of DDR3 RAM, running Windows 7 (64-bit). I found the board gave me a lopt of flexibility when it came to overclocking both the processor and RAM. I upgraded the BIOS to the latest version 0704 too, for good measure, which went painlessly. Listmania!
