Book Description

12 July 2011

This book is very, very different to any other computer book you have ever read. The Smart Method provides an entirely new and better way to learn ASP.NET, C# and Visual Studio. Here are just five of the many ways in which this book is unique:

  • This book will give you the vital first step towards a career in web development without confusing with unnecessary complexity. Users who wish to learn more complex techniques can progress to the Expert Skills book.
  • This is the only book that is also available as a low-cost video (DVD). Each can be used as a stand-alone product, but together they provide an incredibly powerful learning experience.
  • Instruction is logically structured into sessions and lessons. While this makes the book ideal for self-instruction, you can also use it to run your own, highly effective, adult training courses.
  • Every lesson is presented on two facing sheets of A4 paper (the pages are much bigger than in any other ASP.NET book).
  • Along with programming skills, this book teaches best practices that are often ignored by other books.

You'll immediately appreciate the value and relevance of each skill as it is taught. Both IT professionals and absolute beginners will love this book because it avoids needless technical jargon and concisely explains everything you need in a simple and no-nonsense way.

More About the Author

Simon Smart has spent the last 10 years working in almost every aspect of software development, from accounting systems to manufacturing machinery programming. Over the course of his career he has seen software move away from desktop machines and towards web-based applications like the ones covered in this book.

Starting with the earliest versions of ASP he experienced its growth into ASP.NET 4, spending many long hours finding out what works and what doesn't.
Simon always found books and documentation about ASP.NET to be of limited use, even to the experienced. In 2011 he set out to write his own book, hoping to pass on the knowledge gained in his years working as a programmer.

In his spare time, Simon can be usually be found in the outdoors, roaming the forests and hills looking for new places to explore. His dad finds this amusing, particularly when it's raining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, effortless and easy 28 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I stopped programming professionally over ten years ago, but I need to get back into the game. After a couple of stalled attempts, I bought this book. It covers ASP.NET, C#, JavaScript and some CSS - everything I needed in one place. The lessons are carefully paced and each displayed over a two-page spread. By working methodically through the lessons I got a real sense of progress - so far without any frustrations or mis-steps - which I've found very rewarding. The text is easy to read and there are tons of screenshots so you can check what you've done with what the author intended. The experience has been much better than any course I could have gone on.

The book has twelve sections, each divided into around a dozen two-page lessons and followed by an exercise to reinforce what has been covered. You can comfortably complete a section in three or four hours. After finishing the book you should be able to develop an interactive website linked to a database.

My question is - if Simon Smart can make ASP.NET so easy to understand, why can't other authors do the same?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, clear and concise. 21 Jun 2012
By PaulP
This is perfect for beginners and aspiring ASP.NET developers as well as providing a good overview of ASP.NET concepts for those who already have some knowledge of the .NET Framework, C# and ASP.NET in particular.

I have found it to be by far the best training material I have used to date.

Simon, explains everything clearly and concisely and backs this up with practical and easy exercises that will reinforce the concepts you learn.

I will definitely be buying the Expert Skills course as soon as it is available.
