Fun:
I decided to write this review upon seeing Vicky II stamped with a lone star of shame, a single review which draws attention to two minor problems and ignores the great strides that have been made since the original.

First, the positives. Victoria II is a game with a large scope, that requires you to successfully manage industrialisation, foreign relations, internal strife, colonialism (As either the coloniser or the colony) and warfare. This is all presented by a manageable interface, and screens and menus that look daunting at first soon become familiar with time. I couldn't say how good the tutorial was for a beginner, as I had played the original and therefore knew the basics, but the introduction of new concepts was clearly explained.

Unlike other games, including the original, your population is not a legion of mind controlled zombies, but rather broad demographics whose desires, needs and political views you can only influence indirectly. This adds a excellent degree of realism to the game, whilst at the same time greatly reducing the need of micro management required for meddling in the lives of your millions of inhabitants. Socially and politically, the game is top notch, and warfare, although abstracted, also works well.

That said, there are certainly problems. Rebels can often be a problem late in game, craftsmen go hungry, and lag is also an issue in late game for many computers. However, apart from late-game lag, none of the problems with the game are fundamental issues with the engine (As the other reviewer seemed to suggest), and can be instantly corrected with the wide array of user-made modifications available at the forum, or adjusted over the longer term through patches and expansions by Paradox, who are renowned for their long-term commitment to their games.

To conclude, if you've been left hungry for more after the long slide of the Total War series, or you want something more meaty than Civ, then Victoria II is the game for you.

Fun:
Difficult to learn to play, I had to have two friends who had previously played it to tutor me in how to work the game, but its great fun once you're familiar with it. Highly realistic, its not like Total War when you can go on a rampage through Europe, lots of diplomacy to work out whether you can wage war. A knowledge of history is helpful.

Fun:
I own several of Paradox's strategy games including the complex and much maligned Hearts of Iron 3.
This is a very different standard of release to HOI3.It is fully stable and provides an in depth look at the age of Colonialism as top powers manouvred for supremacy during the 19th and early 20th Century.
Though you can play as any country in the known world the game really is designed to be played by one of the "big 8".
There are lots of areas you can adjust including Diplomacy,National Budgets,Industrial Policy,Political and Social Reform and of course the Military.Progress in any of these areas depends on research and your choices but also on the make up of your national Parliaments as elections unfold.
As a hint, dont expect Reactionaries and Conservatives to back Free Trade Unions or a minimum wage for your toiling populations who consequently will cause social unrest.
Rebellions over issues such as regional independence and political issues are a regular hazard which need to be managed.

There is (for once!) an excellent tutorial and though involved this is a very very good game for strategy fans.

It still has occasional areas in which it can improve such as making rebellions less likely and ensuring the mid to late term economies work properly but this is due to be the subject of a patch in the next few weeks.

Highly recommended!

Great history....good fun.
I bought this game some time ago, but started playing it very often only after the release of patch 1.3; as everybody here points out, Paradox really supports its games. Read more

Brilliant design and detail, shame about the fun factor.
I was absolutely amazed by the game's detailed historical content and its accuracy. The only problem is that I found the game boring to play. Read more

More of the same from Paradox
Well, I can certainly say that the release state of Victoria 2 is much better than Hearts of Iron 3 (ie it does not crash and there is no lag issues & memory leaks). Read more
