Fun with Physics! 28 July 2009
Fun:
The thoughtful gameplay in this excellent platformer reminded me a lot of the (now rather elderly) "Project Eden", in that it superficially looks like an action game but is far more about puzzle solving and brain power than quick reflexes and pixel-perfect jumping. The regular placements of respawning points means that the puzzles are always challenging, but never impossible and seldom punishing.
As a single player experience it is very satisfying but it really comes into its own as a two-player game. With one player using the ketboard and mouse and the other a compatible joypad, two (or three with a second joypad) can play on one PC. The pleasure of jumping from a precarious tower of magically-summoned boxes and planks, swinging from a high beam then transforming into a knight and smacking the undead is only beaten by the pleasure of doing all that then using telekinesis to fly a friend on a wobbly magic box to get to the final secret area on the level.
The physics engine used for this game is outstanding, with balancing on teeter-totter boards a particularly realistic experience, and the response of platforms and cogs to weight or pulling a frequent source of pleasure.
Not all controllers work well with the game, and I had to buy an XBox 360 controller to get things working smoothly. Similarly, the wizard character plays well with the mouse/keyboard combination but less well with the joypad. This is why I grade the game 4 not 5. This is a minor niggle, however, and I would recommend this thoughtful and well produced game to any fans of good games.

THREE TIMES THE FUN! 7 July 2009
By NeuroSplicer TOP 100 REVIEWER
Fun:
These are the years of PC gaming that will be known as the Underdog Era: full of indie masterpieces and megapublishers flops. World Of Goo, Mount & Blade, I-Fluid,CRAYON PHYSICS, Defense Grid, all released by small independent companies, were rewarded by much better financial returns than overhyped behemoths of the likes of RED ALERT 3, ANNO 1404 and SPORE. It was not unexpected; after all, just like Limited Installations, greed only pays for a limited number of turns.

TRINE is an excellent physics action/arcade game. You control three interchangeable characters (a thief, a wizard and a warrior). Each has his/hers special abilities, from shooting griping hooks to levitating objects and smashing things up. At any point, you can select which one suits you best. Obstacles have to be turned, balanced, jumped over or simply smashed. Enemies have to be wiped out. And vials have to be discovered and collected before reaching the goal.

Between levels there are checkpoints but, annoyingly, no regular saving is possible (hence the star withheld). If a character dies you are only left with the other(s) to finish off the level. If it is impossible without the missing character(s)' abilities you can always revert to the last checkpoint.

The graphics are just beautiful! If you have seen the DIABLO III trailers, they are comparable. PhysX is required however, so nVIDIA gamers rejoice.
The sounds and voices are nicely done and clearly add to the enjoyment of the game.
Overall, I have been playing this gem for almost a week now and apart for the checkpoint saves I can only say good things about it.

TRINE comes with STEAM (in fact it was released first on that platform) and you will need to be online to post accomplishments - but there are neither limits on the number of installations nor any RootKits of the likes of SecuROM.

RECOMMENDED!

Fun:
Trine is essentially a glossy remake of the classic puzzle game The Lost Vikings.

The graphics and visual effects are gorgeous, colourful and in 3D. The gameplay is in 2D (you can't move in and out of the screen). It's a platform game with puzzles.

You have three characters you can switch between, each with their own abilities: the thief has an extendable rope (think Spiderman/Bionic Commando/Castlevania) and bow & arrow, the knight has a shield (to block fireballs etc) and a sword, the wizard can move remote items or conjure up a useful cube.

Your task is to move through deliciously drawn locations keeping all three alive past spikes, fireballs and enemies whilst picking up flasks for health and experience. You are continually challenged to plan your next move and then to execute it.

You can't save anywhere you like, but checkpoints are frequent. If characters die either trot back to the last checkpoint or see if you can make it to the next one. At checkpoints dead characters reappear. This usually isn't frustrating.

The animation of the characters and objects is extremely good, with very lifelike physics that not only look great, but also are integral to the puzzles.

I adore this game. It is fun, beautifully crafted and satisfying to solve. A very polished revival of a successful formula and a refreshing change from FPS and RTS games.

For me Trine beats both Braid and World of Goo. I lift my hat to the fantastic Finnish developers (Frozen Byte).
