Endless musical fun! 10 Jan 2009
By S. Smith VINE™ VOICE
Fun:
While Guitar Hero, Rock Band and if you remember them Amplitude and Frequency are all fantastic games, Audiosurf lets you play with your own cd/mp3 collection. It takes your tracks, finds out the beat and instrumentation and sets up a track for you to fly over. Along it is thrown lots of different coloured bricks for you to collect. You can't really die, you can only get higher scores which are then uploaded online for a huge competition across the globe to see whos best at that song.

The gameplay's simple but as with all good games, it has the one-more-go addiction. There's plenty of twists to the gameplay if you want them too.

The only downside is that it comes with Steam which seems to me like an online version checker and store for more games. This means you need to validate your copy online and I guess that means it may have some spyware or such. It's yet to cause me any problems yet but then I've never delved into it.

So in short, an excellent game to waste literally tons of hours on!!!

Expected more fun 3 Jan 2010

Fun:
On first try, it's pretty fun to collect blocks to the beat of the music. The game itself is pretty to look at and has many customisation options. Change the ships you control, colours, speeds etc...

However where it falls down is the control system. The keyboard is accurate, but not responsive enough to control the ship at tight areas where lanes needed to be navigated quickly. The mouse is more responsive but not accurate enough. Often you will miss blocks because you were just outside the right lane by a few millimetres.

You can have endless play with this game, and the endless amount of music you can put into it backs this up however be aware it isn't fun for everyone and that fun doesn't last when you're missing blocks not because your mind isn't operating quick enough but because the control scheme cannot keep up with the action.

Fun:
As a game, Audiosurf is quite neat and reminds me of some classic puzzle games such as Klax. Yet, the crux of the game is the ability to load in your own MP3 (or listen to the in-game radio) and let the game build the levels around the music, by analysing the waveform structure. Throw in some fancy graphics and effects, colours and sounds and you practically "ride" your music. Obviously, some songs work better than others, beat-heavy games have a much more visibly impact on the level (track). Soundtracks are also a good way to experience the game's full potential, as they usually vary dramatically within the same song, making the track more diverse. The game is spiced up by many gameplay variations and difficulty levels, and there should be a style to play this game for everyone in terms of challenge or controls. Some may prefer only to "collect" the tiles or evade them, while others prefer to stack tiles up and create stacks of matching blocks. The ability to upload and inspect highscores via the internet is a nice one, I have not used that feature yet however, so I cannot comment on that. All in all, a innovative and ambitious indie title and I am sure this is not the last we heard from that developer.
