While I have a lot of experience in building PC's, this was the first time I dealt with coolers and thermal paste as usually the stock coolers that come pre-supplied with some CPUs are satisfactory. But when I saw my CPU, AMD Phemon X4 2.2GHz Quad Core, started to reach 70+ degrees Celsius, I thought it's about time to upgrade the cooler.

First impressions are it's a very big item, though despite all that metal, it's also very light-weight. It will not cause any problems to full sized tower cases or strain on the motherboard, but beware: due to it's size it will only fit inside full sized ATX cases. If you only have a mini-ATX case, this cooler will not fit inside. It comes pre-supplied with it's own thermal paste, but I decided to remove that and use my own. I also cannibalized the stock CPU fan and turned it in to a case fan to help with the air flow. When I first booted up the PC, the CPU temp was at it's lowest it's ever been at only 6 degrees Celsius, and settling down about 5 minutes later around 15 degrees. Very good.

Next I played some demanding games, S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky, and GTA 4. Both these games pushed my CPU's temperature up to the 60's and 70's with the old stock fan, but using this cooler the highest the temperature the CPU got to was only 29 degrees and this was a good hours worth of playing on each game and with all the graphics settings maxed out at a screen size of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. The log on the freeware program CoreTemp proved this.

It took a bit of effort getting the cooler fitted and the fan cable connected.

Using this on a Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz E8400 to replace the stock cooler, the fasteners of which had started to break.

The improvement I've seen is absolutely amazing. I've now overclocked my little processor because this has given such amazing improvement. So far I've only been able to push it to 3.7GHz from the stock 3, but that's not due to temperature, just my generally noobiness in overclocking. I am confident that with this cooler I could get past 4.0GHz. I'd certainly recommend this for anyone looking to get an old processor working faster.

Super easy installation, the instruction are minimal (just diagrams), but they suffice. I can't say how easy it would be for AMD set ups, but for intel it is extremely simple. It comes with pre-applied thermal paste, which seemed well applied and is doing an amazing job.

The noise isn't an issue at all for me, I haven't noticed any increase over the stock fan.

Just note, it is quite big. The height shouldn't be an issue for anyone, but it's very wide, so if you don't have low-profile RAM you might have an issue.

Difference in temperature:
[using Prime to get to full load and Core Temp to measure temperature]

STOCK COOLER:
Idle - 33*C
Full load (3GHz) - ~60*C
Full load (OC) - Not possible, too high heat.

Arctic Cooling Freezer:
Idle - 33*C
Full load (3GHz) - 35*C
Full load (oCd to 3.7GHz) - 42*C

First of I ordered this one day and it arrived the next - good service, good vendor. This is a big heat sink and I mean big! It houses a 120mm fan in the centre, so that will give you an idea of size. It was well packaged so there where no bent fins or damage from fittings flying around in the box. On opening up, you will get the heat sink with the fan fitted, fittings for Intel (775, 1155 and 1156 sockets) and AMD (sockets 939,940, AM2, AM3, AM3+ and FM1) and a good splash of thermal compound applied to the copper base of the heat sink. Also folded neatly inside where the fitting instructions. These were good and all diagrams which were very clear apart from one thing - the direction to point the 120mm fan, but if you think about it, you want the fan either blowing up or blowing to the rear of the case were all computers vent to, this being dependent on the orientation of your CPU socket.
Fitting was a breeze. Take the fan off and fit the fittings as per instructions, at most it will take any experienced computer tech less than 10 minutes to fit. Just watch the thermal compound, it is grease so will get everywhere if you are not careful. All you need is a slightly longer than normal Phillips screw driver to screw the retaining clip to fittings. Very easy to do (TIP- magnetize the end of you screw driver, makes it easy to pick up screws and on the AMD fittings start the screws off by hand (1 turn to get it in position). Screw it down tight once in, with the Intel fitting as far as you can, but bear in mind don't be ham fisted and really screw it hard, take your time. Once it is down tight, refit the 120mm fan and pull the cable through the bottom and hold it tight - this stops a loose bit of cable hitting fan blades and this is the fiddly bit, attaching the fan socket to the motherboard.
