5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! 15 Jan 2001
Format:Audio CD
This is music at it's finest. Very uplifting - you'll feel better for listening to it. Every song is a classic. Even my husband - who is not a major JA fan - loves this record. It's never off the CD player.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much under-rated British singer/songwriter 24 Oct 2005
Format:Vinyl
A beautiful collection of well crafted and well penned songs. It is testament to Joan Armatrading's talent that Georgie Fame amongst others 'guest' on her LPs time and again. Willow is a haunting lovely song rising and falling with all the emotion Joan pours into her songs. Opportunity is a more 'funky' sound with syncopated rhythm, vocals from high to low and more clever lyrics. Every song on this album has something to say to someone and yet remains personal (no doubt to J A as well) to the listener. New to Joan Armatrading? This is a very good starting point, as is 'The Collection'. Dig out the old record player, spin the vinyl and chill out to this one, it's so full of emotion!!

Absolutely love it. Amazing range of songs! Joan has never been given the recognition she so richly deserves for her talent and artistry.

5.0 out of 5 stars An old friend 5 May 2013

Yet another LP replacement, in the 70's and 80's I bought all her albums as they were released, and non disappointed me. This album has been on my frequent playlist for a very long time, "Show Some Emotion" and "Willow" are the most familiar songs to most non fans, but the high quality of the remaining songs showcase Ms Armatrading's ability to write and perform in a variety of styles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Her best 15 Nov 2007
Format:Audio CD
Like its predecessor, produced by the legendary Glyn Johns, but with more verve in all departments and for me the best of all of them ~ superb on every level with an all star Brit cast of the day, including Jerry Donahue on electric guitar and Dave Mattacks on drums on a few tracks, both formerly of The Fairport Convention.

Misses the perfect ***** only `cos I don't much like the last track on S.1 and one might wish for a tad more bite to the sound, even with digital remastering. But the bass is good and there are several great songs here, more in fact than on any subsequent album. For this one, she was absolutely at her peak in all departments.
