TasteTasting Notes:

Nose: Quite simple: perfect. The smoke is dry, something akin to the ash from a cold peat fire; there are hints, though no more, of fruit, possibly sherry. There are hints, though no more, of slightly overdone roasted potato. There are hints, though no more, of coffee-stained old Demerara rum. There are hints, though no more, of sweet grist falling from the mill.

Palate: From the utter silky brilliance of the delivery to the multi-layered middle this simply oozes complexity, and on a level only a handful of distilleries in the world can ever dream of reaching; a molecule or two of over enthusiastic oak takes this away from a full mark, but I am being harsh; the fruit and barley are in an embrace that only the purest of lovers would know....

Finish: Some serious caramel from the cask, and a fruity follow through, perhaps robs the whisky of some of its intricate notes, but again Iam being ultra picky. An unusual oiliness for Ardbeg, though only slight, helps further the finale and encourages some mocha to develop.

Product Description

Nose
The undiluted nose is deep and rounded - chocolate caramels and barley sugar combine
with dates, raisins and smooth sherry notes. Later, you find leather and linseed oil.
With water the sweetness gives way to malted honeycomb, with flowering currants
emerging through the smoky sweetness of a well-fired fruit pudding.

Taste
Sweet, chewy and oily with a silky mouthfeel. The flavour is initially sweet, revealing
fruit cake and treacle. This is followed by smoked barbecued or honey-roast food with
the slightest hint of olives.

Finish
Again long, both sweet and dry with honey, treacle and a trace of lint.

Ardbeg plus sherry.

I love this more and more each time I drink some. Smells of peat, sugar, smoke and, maybe, coffee. Tastes sweet and then there's a numbing of the mouth as the peat smoke takes hold and a dry smoke literally hits the throat and then nose. The finish goes on for ages, your mouth is still tingling 30 minutes later.

Utterly brilliant.

I'd read about this whisky for a long time and kept putting off trying it, thinking I'd be disappointed after all the hype. How wrong I was, this is the stuff of legend, an absolutely outstanding whisky which completely blew my mind away. Fantastic stuff. you have to try it!

Wow this is the King of peat laden whiskey. Between me & my friends this type of whiskey is like marmite love or hate & not much margin in between. For me it is the holy grail I have been searching for the strongest peat flavour for years & now found it. Please don't let this put you off it is also incredibly smooth has immense depth & an exceptionally long finish which means this is truly the whiskey to savour. I am now in the process of trying the other Ardbeg offerings & if they are half as good I will be pleased.
