Firstly as other reviewers have already said it is important to update it to the latest firmware version, this is as easy as setting up your wifi link to the unit and selecting firmware update- my unit came with 2.2 out of the box so there was only a minor update required.
So far Broadband router is located upstairs and the unit works perfectly downstairs with no disconnections. Using the unit with wifi on, watching video clip and brightness set to a third, gives 5-6 Hours (pretty good considering this is a 7" screen), You should get another half/ 1 hour on top if you disconect the wifi.
I use this unit for Hd films mainly and the quality is excellent, I purchased the combined Audio and video codec directly from archos and this costs approx £13, when you register the product they give you an additional codec for free. You dont have to buy the codec, its just i cant be bothered to convert the movies to the required format. Once the codec is installed you just drag and drop the video files into the video folder and they just play. (tried about seven different films with different codecs and they have all worked so far).
I have even tethered my external gps reciever to this unit installed co-poilot 8 and it works like a dream (looks amazing on the 7" screen).
The nice thing about this device is the 250gb hard drive and the 1.5gb for apps/ games in the system memory (the solid state version is 8gb + what sd stick you put in, but the internal memory for apps/games installs is only a third of this size- (worth bearing in mind if you want to install alot of apps/games).
You will find when you install apps/ games approx 90% of the install is stored on the hard drive and the other 5-10% is stored on the internal memory (1.5tb quota), this doesnt appear to effect game performance (only battery cosumption- hard drive spinning). Side loading apps and games onto this unit is easy, just create a folder on hard drive call it apps/games and copy the apk files in there (then install when you need them). Unofficial archos app is easy to install and works like a charm (already explained else in these reviews)
I have installed a couple of games need for speed, Hawx and touch racing they look amazing on this unit (with no sign of slow down). Just a final word i purchased the Ipad screen protector from poundland and this can be cut down to 2 screen protectors for the archos 70 also if you want a cheap case for this unit google Archos Av700 case cost me £3.09 plus £1.50 postage and it fits perfectly (the official cases start around £25)
I have an old archos 604 and an Ipod touch 3rd gen and i have to say this is my best purchase so far !!
Then I saw the ARCHOS 70, over half the price of the ipad and other tablets, and a 250Gb storage space? It was an easy choice!
The ARCHOS 70 is the same size as my Kindle and just a little thicker so packs well into my bag for on the flights. With my ARCHOS 5 I had a mini dock for connecting to the TV and charging when travelling and a DVR station for playing on the TV at home, now I just need my charger and a mini HDMI cable and everything is built into the tablet.
The screen is clear, responsive and easy to use, lots of android apps to play with, even Angry Birds and I loaded 75 films, 20 stand-up comedy shows, and 15 tv series onto mine last night with still some room for music. The HDMI output to the TV is easy to use, the touchpad is a little slow and takes some getting used to when it is displayed on your TV, but it works very well and over-rides most hotel TV systems which is perfect.
I didn't need a new ARCHOS, my version 5 worked amazingly well, but I am so glad I treated myself to this upgrade. Why bother with the other tablets like ipad and galaxy when I can carry my whole film collection on one item.
