4.0 out of 5 stars Really nice 12 Feb 2011
Verified Purchase
Had this Archos 43 Internet Tablet a couple of days now and just about figured out all the stuff it can do. Once it's updated to Android 2.2 and you get the full Google Market installed (see ArchosFans forums) it's really a very nice device. I've got a 16gb micro SD card ordered so that'll take it up to 32gb storage.

The reason it's not a 5 star device is the resistive touchscreen which means no multi-touch and does compromise the browsing experience. Having to double tap or tap the on-screen zoom buttons to zoom web pages sure isn't as slick as pinching. You'll sometimes find you select things when you meant to scroll as well. I would advise you to buy a stylus or use a finger nail. Finger tips work for most things, but not when you need to click something small. Only other issues are a few crashes (mainly with the Archos AppsLib which you don't need to use) but it's not a problem just to reboot the device.

As for the positives, the movie playback is good with lots of file types supported. Battery life seems very good so far. If you're mostly web browing and gaming on it you can expect 8-10 hours. There's lots of apps and games on the market, some of them really quite decent, and almost everything I've tried so far has worked. The 3D games show the device is quite powerful too. I really bought it as a movie device with a browsing capability, so to find it can entertain you for hours with games is a real bonus (the touchscreen seems fine with gaming btw). It can also output to TV at 720p with a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable although I haven't got one to try this.

In case you buy one I want to save you some headaches. When you select the wifi network to connect to you'll see a 'power saving' checkbox.

4.0 out of 5 stars AWSOME!! 6 Mar 2011
I am really pleased I bought this and I hope it lasts a long time.

Pro's:
Does everything it says
Size is good, it does fit in the pocket
All apps I have tried so far work
Battery life is good
Memory is good, but if it's not big enough for you, you can buy a micro sd card to go in

Con's:
The screen does lag a lot
Some of the browsers suddenly close, especially apps lib

overall I would advise everyone to buy it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars all that we wanted 25 April 2011
Wanted a music and game playing device for my son to amuse himself on long journeys. But at the same time wanted to avoid Apple prices and all that hassle with iTunes syncing/registering that comes with a pod. This exactly fits the bill. Trivial to connect directly to the household wifi, and then it's easy to download new games for free from the Android apps. You can even mount network shares directly and copy music and videos directly from them (not too easy, but, hah, let's see an iThing do something useful like that!)
My son says, it's not a phone so he doesn't have to worry about phone charges -- it's easy to download videos from you tube and he loves the Android games.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 23 Mar 2011
By Ariana
I was really excited when I had a chance to get this device.
I was trying to find a replacement for my media player that died after a few good years and as I was curious about having a device with Android OS on it I decided to choose the Archos 43 mainly as a media player but also due to the Android OS and availability of Wi-Fi and apps that can be installed.
The device looks great, slim and light and Android 2.2 works great on it, really enjoyed having both a media player and being able to install games and other apps and extend the media player capabilities.
I've been using it for about 3 weeks and then trouble started, the screen seemed to develop a life of its own becoming unresponsive and getting out of control, it got to the point where I could not control any functionality and the menus and homes screens seemed to jitter and jump from one to the other with every touch of the screen.
I've been trying to figure what the issue is but when I did it was too late, the screen stopped responding completely. I've decided to format the device and update the firmware but it did not help and I was not able to pass the calibration screen after updating the firmware.
Trying to reach Archos' support proved to be to hard, I wasn't smart enough to register my device as soon as I got it (though I didn't expect any issues after only 3 weeks of moderate use, so didn't feel pressure to do that). Without registering the device you cannot open a support ticket as the device registration requires a device key which you can only get through the device settings (impossible to do when the device stops responding!) .
So far I wasn't able to find a way to contact Archos and find a solution for this.
It is very disappointing to have a device like this break down after only 3 weeks without being able to find a way to fix it, I have used Archos media players in the past and never had any issues.

3.0 out of 5 stars Touchscreen experience is awful 10 July 2011
I bought this device for my daughter and I have to say that I am very dissapointed. I knew the touchscreen was resistive but never thought that playing around would be so painful, also the quality of the pictures/video taken with the camara is not good for the standars these days.

On the other hand, the other features of the Archos are very good, playing a movie over the Network from my HTPC is great, flash support, wireless connectivity, battery life.

I have a Blackberry Torch 9800 myself, the touchscreen is capacitive, and I have played around with it a lot, and I have to say that the user experience is much, much better than with the Archos 43.

Advice: Do not buy any device with a resistive touchscreen because you will regret it.ARCHOS 43 16 GB Internet TabletARCHOS 43 16 GB Internet Tablet
