The unit supports Samba (SMB) and uPnP so I thought I was laughing given WHS supports little else! In fact, despite a good wifi connection, this unit often either fails to list the servers themselves, or when it does it grinds to a halt as it tries to list even the folders available, let alone the actual content. It often switches itself off before it lists a single album, or comes back with the (incorrect) listing 'No Content Found'. I've got a nice, fast network with a strong wifi signal so I know this isn't a factor, as Windows Media Player client and more basic 'directory listing' methods works perfectly on my lounge TV and laptop. I think what astounds me the most is that the unit doesn't appear to try to 'cache' your files, only looking for updates every time. So, even if it did consistently work, it would take 5 minutes just to cue up that old episode of The Mary Whitehouse experience or whatever.
So, totally useless even with a modest media collection, and I'm going to go back to using my old 1GB ipod nano...
The first thing I did was update the firmware which updated to the latest version of Android. I then installed ArcTools from the AppsLib which gave me Android Market.
I was able to install the Google Apps that I needed and they worked fine. The web browser supports the latest CSS and HTML standards and Javascript. It also supports plugins (Flash, etc.) although I haven't tested those.
As a bonus I found that when I installed Skype for Android I could make phone calls, this has a built in microphone you just need headphones on. This was a real plus.
I can't believe the technology I got here for the price. I was going to upgrade my phone to one of the new Android based ones but don't need to now.
Some apps don't work that I have downloaded so I haven't downloaded anything you pay for. But I've got Angry Birds for the kids and a great toy for myself.
Excellent value for money.
Be sure to charge before use, I thought mine was DOA but I left it in and it worked.
I knock off a star because not all apps have worked on it, I would have expected them to. But there are so many and all the important stuff works.
It's garbage. It really won't take and hold a wifi connection, even when I'm standing *over* the router (I've tried two routers). Laptops on the other side of the house are fine. The touchscreen is worse than anyone said - I have to use a pen. And the Spotify app really doesn't play nicely at all - jumps to offline mode even when the wifi connection is up.
The worst thing about it is that it isn't broken yet. I've thrown it all over the place in frustration (and I've wasted hours on it, so no wonder). So, er, one star for being shockproof.
Don't buy it.
