Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This sophomore full-length, Apricot Morning solidifies Holland's reputation, building upon the chilled foundations of his 2001 debut The Fifth Exotic with a body of tracks that deftly slides the soul and funk of his acclaimed Quantic Soul Orchestra project into the slow-motion down-tempo vibe characteristic of his earlier work. The opening title track lays out the sonic stall, with plentiful strings expanding into loping percussion, the click of a woodblock eventually giving way to some classy guitar riffery. Throw in a liberal scattering of afro beat, plenty of cheeky brass lines (both sampled and courtesy of sax wielding sister Lucy) and the resultant blend makes for some great home listening. Add a further dimension courtesy of the vocals of EQ, Bristol based hip hoppers Aspects and the wonderful Alice Russell--who gives it up like Carleen Anderson on the slick "Search the Heavens"--and Apricot Morning proves itself the most accomplished and ambitious album to date for Tru Thoughts. --Kingsley Marshall

Grown on me.... 17 Dec 2002
Format:Audio CD
Quantics second album has slowly grown on me, at first I wasn't impressed and if you don't own a Quantic album I'd still recommend buying the 5th Exotic first. However the more upbeat sound and the vocal tracks I've started to appreciate more and the title track and Trouble from the river are both excellent.

Sorry but... 4 Oct 2006
By Ben
Format:Audio CD
Sorry but... I was really disappointed with this after 'Fifth Exotic'. Apricot Morning is filled with inane unchanging happy beats which come nowhere near the depth of 'Fifth Exotic', which for me, was almost a work of genius. There are some really nice tunes on this CD, especially 'Trouble from the River', but the number of glowing five-star reviews is a bit much.

Sublime. 23 July 2003
Format:Audio CD
Holland combines elements of some of my favourite laid back, soulful producers to come up with an album that is, as one reviewer has already perfectly summarised, 'summer in a box'. I heard the funk of Mr Scruff, the soul and warmth of nightmares on wax and the jazztasticalness of St Germain and the laid back atmosphere of Red Snapper, yet it remains as individual as all those mentioned. Alice Russels vocals shine, especially on Sweet Calling. I heard a snippet of it whilst buying some shoes, asked the girl who it was and promptly went out and bought it. I was not let down. Each listen revealed a deeper layer of enjoyment until it has become one of my most prised Cds. Buy it, play it to people you love and appreciate and watch the smiles appear.
