Firstly let me mention the shipping on this item. I went for supersaver shipping and it arrived within 15 hours! Fantastic! I guess it's too heavy to ship in the normal post and so went to Parcel Force.

Anyway, the UPS. It's small and well made with 8 sockets (wide enough for most power bricks), 4 are on the UPS and 4 are surge protection only.

As for power, it's enough to keep my 20" iMac, ADSL router and network switch running for about 15 minutes. OSX picks up the UPS via USB without any of the APC drivers so it's really easy to configure.

Firstly if you do any work on your PC that is of importance then please buy a UPS as it can save you a lot of grief.

The APC is a neat package and easy to install. The UPS includes 4 standard 3 pin sockets with UPS and spike protection and another 4 with spike protection only. The included software is easy to install and simple to configure. The shutdown process works fine and puts your machine into hibernation so that you do not loose any information.

I have a Belkin UPS on my other PC (see my review) and although the Belkin has a more sophisticated shutdown and monitoring function it does not have standard 3 pin socket connections and uses a serial interface to the PC. So for a simple fit and forget device I would go for the APC. Highly recommended.

Having had several power cuts recently, and with my iMac always on I got very worried about the damage that could be done to it.

I was amazed what a complex business buying a UPS can be and even more amazed that many don't come with sockets for standard 3 pin plugs.

Enter the APC ES 700VA. Despite being as ugly as sin it's perfect for home or small office use. Simply connect the internal battery up (about 10 seconds) and plug it in. Then plug your items into it.

The instructions stated about 16 hours to charge but mine seems almost ready from the off. A USB lead connects to my iMac and it automatically senses it and 'talks' to it with no need for the included software (don't know whether it's the same for Windows - probably not as it's usually more complex).

And what do you know, less than 24 hours after installing it we have a power cut. The iMac detects it shuts itself down if set to. During the power outage the UPS sounds an extremely annoying alarm which I understand but it's pretty obvious when you have a power cut so the unit has to be turned off to stop it which is a bit of a pain as you have to remember to turn it back on when the power's back on or it sounds every few minutes.

For around £70 it's fantastic peace of mind. The cost of a new / repaired computer due to a power cut would be loads more, and that's not to mention the issue of potential data loss.

All in all a great product and, as others have written, very quick delivery even on free Super Saver.
