Biography

by Richie Unterberger

The career of Lou Reed defies capsule summarization. Like David Bowie (whom Reed directly inspired in many ways), he has made over his image many times, mutating from theatrical glam rocker to scary-looking junkie to avant-garde noiseman to straight rock & roller to your average guy. A firmer grasp of rock's earthier qualities has ensured a more consistent ... Read more in Amazon's Lou Reed Store

Product Description

Lou Reed's Animal Serenade is a double live album, but to his credit--and in spite of his cantankerous image--he makes sure the appeal is wider than to strictly his hardcore fans. So, in the midst of the inevitable newer solo material, there's also a selection of classic tracks that span his entire career, from solo hit "Dirty Blvd" to Velvet Underground classics such as "All Tomorrow's Parties", "Sunday Morning" and "Venus in Furs". Of course, in the time-honoured tradition of solo albums, there's a lot of self-indulgence here: the intro track teases with the opening riff of "Sweet Jane" before launching into the lesser-known "Small Town" (a cruel trick, really), while "Venus in Furs" is a laconic 10 minutes long and features a viola solo. But his hometown audience (very much a New York City crowd) don't seem to mind at all. Animal Serenade is a dark and sombre live album, a mood that suits Lou Reed's music perfectly. --Ted Kord

BBC Review

Recorded at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles during his 2003 world tour, Animal Serenade is an obvious homage to Rock 'n' Roll Animal which was cut some thirty years earlier and deemed by some as the best live album ever. So, no pressure then.

Reed's first live release since 1998's Perfect Night: Live In London, Animal Serenadefeatures the now-veteran Michael Rathke and Fernando Saunders on guitar and bass respectively. Where Animal is a prog-rock fest led by a somewhat belligerent anti-showman Serenade is a more matured and jovial affair with Reed occasionally coming across as nervous, like a first-time stand-up comedian. There would have been a time when he would have told the audience to shut up now he makes jokes about how he never made a living out of three chords...'It was four'.

Groan you may, but thankfully the music far outshines the comic performances on this release with Reed performing a generous portion of his back catalogue. Velvet Underground material is celebrated brilliantly with, amongst others, ''Sunday Morning'', ''Candy Says''and a mammoth ten minute version of ''Venus In Furs'' due to a Hendrix-does-Zorn styled cello solo from Jane Scarpantoni.

The main purpose of this release, however, is to celebrate Reed's three studio albums: Set The Twilight Reeling, Ecstacy and the critically acclaimed The Raven. ''Ecstacy'' live is a fine example of how Reed has developed as a songwriter whilst maintaining his unique style of guitar playing; featuring a fantastic solo where we know neither where he is going nor what his motives are. Nor do we care really. The results are astounding.

The best work on the recording must be material from The Raven, Reed's most recent studio recording. He introduces ''Vanishing Act'' as 'really such a beautiful song' and after the crowd settles the breathtaking intensity of this rendition proves it was no understatement. ''The Raven'' too is awesome. Reed's reworking of Poe's classic poem is a testament to the former VU star's writing and performing ability.

So Rock'n'Roll Animal: Part two this isn't, but Animal Serenade is a great document of how a legend can and is maintaining legendary status by doing what he does best: playing four chords and telling the truth. Maybe over two hours is a wee bit too long and a one disc edit might seem like less of a Reed-athon but when the man is on this good a form, better to have too much than not enough. --Cormac Heron

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable record of a remarkable tour 27 Mar 2004
Format:Audio CD
Believe all the five star reviews! This is a truly unique experience. If you didn't catch any of the 2003 shows, this is the next best thing. I had the privelidge to catch the Coventry UK (my old home town) show and was surprised, mesmerised and enchanted. First thought's were, no Tony Smith on drums... so no rock-out, volume. How wrong could I be! Amazingly the 5 piece, Mike Rathke, Jane Scarpantoni, Lou, Fernando Saunders and Antony manage to create entire soundscapes from the simple, sparse, reserved, but incredibly powerful Vanishing Act to the all out power of Men of Good Fortune. Fernando must take credit for playing various basses and electronic drums (sometimes simultaneously) as must Mike Rathke who plays guitar and synths. Jane puts in an incredible performance, creating atmospheric soundscapes to augment certain tracks, while tackling the repetitive riff of Street Hassle for he full 7 minutes... but most stunning is her frenetic, awe inspiring solo on Venus In Furs.
This tour was a complete triumph for Lou and the band. Re-working songs from the 35+ years of Lou's recorded output, none falling short of the original. Fans of Lou's deceptively simple but inimicable solos, utilising controlled feedback that can paralyse entire crowds will not be dissapointed. Lou's Telecaster is used in moderation but to drastic effect, with 40 years experience, Lou's unique technique is closer to perfection than ever before.
Jane must take my personal award for her outstanding performance throughout, but one cannot fault the entire band, including Master Ren.
A tour de force

5.0 out of 5 stars Too good for words 29 July 2004
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I had given up on Lou sometime around Set the Twilight Reeling, but something tugged at me after reading reveiws to venture another time with Lou. I am not disappointed at all, I cannot stop playing this album in the car. Being 'off' Lou I never went to the shows, and now I deeply regret that decision. From soup to nuts this is the best CD I have played this year.
Damn it, I now have to buy the albums I ignored from 1996 onwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing 30 Jun 2005
By RX100
Format:Audio CD
amazing! that's all i can say, it's clean--pat attention here, a lot reed fan and the VU fans alike are looking for rough recordings, sound raw and real live, they like to talk about lou's clean recordings unsatisfactory, well, this one might fall into that clean category again. but it's lou! not vu no more!
a concise, mature small lineup, great performance, great sounding is all we need from the mature lou! the rough sound of vu characterised their spirit, we should expect something different from lou!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lou Reed Still Smokin'... 3 Mar 2005
By Og Oggilby VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Well, it's a double live album, always seen as something of a contractual obligation, but Lou Reed invests his live shows with something different. So you get reworkings of Velvets faves such as 'All Tomorrow's Parties' and 'Sunday Morning', but he does them well, and there's a something appealling about the fact that he can't really carry a tune anymore, a vulnerable quality that is quite disarming in an artist of his maturity. Better than you'd expect, and well worth your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST LOU REED LIVE ALBUM EVER ? 3 Sep 2013
Format:Audio CD
WOW I love Lou REED. I have seen him live many times and also had the pleasure of seeing the reformed Velvet UNDERGROUND in London and Edinburgh not edinborrow Lou
:- )
I saw Lou live in Bristol during this tour and was blown away. Lou was on great form and the band were awesome. The play list had many old favourites ( no sweet jane !! )
Many of my personal Lou favs are on this live set, tell it to your heart, sunday morning, call on me, candy says and some old VU tracks heroin, all tomorrows parties,

I did not think Lou would ever come close to rock n roll animal as his ultimate live recording but Animal Serenade does just that.

My personal favorite a simply beautiful and haunting VANISHING ACT
