AMD Phenom 2 X3 5 Sep 2009
This cpu works very very well with the Gigabyte GA-M720_US3 (I have also written a review on this motherboard)

Ok people are always asking about the 4th core that you can unlock well i can honestly say yes it did unlock and it wasn't very stable at all.
After unlocking it i got constant shutdowns, constant Dump Memory errors and sometimes just not even turning on.
Also the cpu runs at 2.8ghz and that did not change at all with all 4 cores which i assumed it would.

The cpu is very easy to overclock and i got a stable 3.4ghz with a Zalman Cooler (read the review on the motherboard again to find out how to overclcok using the gigabyte motherboard and also a 3dmarko6 result).

I had alot of issues with the 4th core and overclocking to start with but that was my own fault i guess people get giddy and want to push things that little bit more.

So as i said previously the 4th core unlocked was a no go and a pain in the backside to lock again but after updating the motherboards bios the cpu came alive.
I have read reviews that this can go way past 4ghz obviously with good cooling or even water cooling.

My opinion is you are looking for a cheap way of upgrading to the Phenom 2 then really this is it but on the other hand if you are wanting a quad core then don't assume that this cpu will unlock and work perfectly just buy the X4 instead.

This is probably the best cpu i have had upto now an trust me i come from the AMD 6000+ (3ghz) and that lasted me years and still played the latest games.
The only downfall which i could say is that it feels limited by the sluggishness of Vista.

Without trying it in windows 7 I honestly cannot say but what i can say is when i did try it with the old cpu the difference in speed was very clear so i can only imagine that this would be like a perfect partnership.

Hope this helps people and sorry i cannot review it on windows 7 which is a shame.

I was lucky enough to have an unlockable motherboard (Asus M4A79XTD EVO) + a working 4th core to offer me a quad core phenom II :D
Which unlike the above review is running very stable, so I suppose I got lucky with that too :P
I can say this processor runs very cool on my 3rd party cooler(mine is a ocz vendetta)

This cpu has more than enough power for current games ect, and so has handed the bottleneck back to my HD4850

Unfortunately I haven't tried overclocking it yet, but I guess thats because so far I really don't see the use (unless for the challenge of course)

Overall, Running on Windows 7 (64-bit) I have had no issues on what has been my first build with this item.
Used to be a bit cheaper also, but I think its still worth it :)

Awesome cpu! 14 May 2009
By Carlos Marcano - Published on Amazon.com
This has to be the best known secret from AMD, it is an awesome cpu. You can look at it from two points of view:

First: If you are only interested in running it at stock clock speed then you have a really great price/performance ratio and this cpu will be good enough for most of modern duties.

Two: But if you are as me and are interested in pushing the envelope, then this cpu is a dream came true. As it is a Black Edition it is overclockable as hell, reported reviews show speeds up to 3.7 Ghz on air cooling (with after market cpu coolers of course) and some claim that it can be pushed a little bit farther. And the beauty is that this cpu runs very cool.

And if you are lucky enough and have the proper motherboard, you might get to unlock a fully functional fourth core. Yep, that is right you get a Phenom II 920 performance for a lot less money. And you can still overclock as hell!

I was lucky enough because I bough two of this cpus to upgrade my two computers, one of the 720 did not unlock the fourth core but the other one did! By the way I pair it with a Biostar TA790GX 128M motherboard, which is from what I have researched, one of the best matches to unlock the fourth core, just take into account that you must use the 2009-01-13 bios and not the newer ones because it is been said that they are patching new bios to avoid unlocking the fourth core in the 720's.

Amazing! 20 May 2009
By Robert Anderson - Published on Amazon.com
I was wanting to upgrade from my X2 6400 to something a little more up to date as it was starting to show it's age in recent games such as GTA4, NBA 2K9, Call of Duty 4, etc. So I did a little searching and found this chip and after reading up on it a bit I decided to give it a shot.

... WOW! This thing is blazing fast and incredibly easy to overclock. I oc'ed it to 3.3ghz right out of the box by simply raising the multiplier. One hour prime95 stress test and it's 100 stable. I'll try to take it higher later on, but for now it's fine as is and anything more would just be for bragging rights.

Games have seen a massive improvement as well. Call of Duty 4 and World at War both running at 1920x1200 are both locked at 60FPS. Crysis Warhead gets 30FPS with gamer/high settings at 720p. GTA4 runs a consistent 40FPS at 1920x1200 and NBA 2K9 is totally maxed out with ultra high player models at a locked 60FPS. The difference is incredible. In some of these games I've gained 10-15 FPS just from upgrading to this CPU without changing anything else.

My specs:
BFG 8800GT
Phenom X3 720 BE @ 3.3ghz
4gb Corsair XMS ram
750w Corsair PS
Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 Motherboard

BACK IN BLACK 15 Sep 2009

This is the best processor for the money right now. Blows away the duals and keeps up with the quads. Buy it and be blown away at the performance.
