Having been part of the church for many years, it’s easy to forget how we appear to visitors and newcomers - those cultural quirks and strange practices that, over time, become second nature. Ruth Roberts’ book promises to give us a glimpse of ourselves as others see us, and it doesn’t disappoint - her descriptions of a confusing and sometimes bizarre world took me back to my early experiences at church, and reminded me just how difficult it is for newcomers to make sense of this alien culture. However, what I wasn’t expecting was such a touching and personal story of new faith. Ruth’s kindness, soft heart and honesty shine through the stories, and moved me to tears several times. As a new Christian, her natural and instinctive understanding of Jesus’ heart - loving others, binding up the broken-hearted and setting the captives free - is deeply inspiring. I'm left pondering why, in the process of ‘doing church’, we can so often lose the initial, child-like understanding of God’s love that brought us there in the first place.

A straight- forward account of a new believer in Christ. This is a very easy and enjoyable read and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to find out what the church family is like. Ruth Roberts used to write for The News Of The World and brings the same immediacy into her book. She is full of questions and muddles along trying to make sense of what she is learning. The whole book cheered me up enormously and gave me a refreshing look at where the local church is strongest today.

I have not come across a book that deals with new believers adapting to church life. Ruth is very open and honest which gives the book a distinctly personal feel. The situations she describes are very common to people; opinions of friends, church meeting protocol, what is 'acceptable' to say, fear, doubt, confusion etc Are you a new believer? Read it. Been a Christian for years? Read it. The latter, which I am, forget that church meetings and Christian life in general can be a daunting prospect with misconceptions, how to 'fit in' (acceptance), differing views and attitudes. Ruth shares her experience of all these things and that the love and grace of God covers it all. However, the feelings people have are real and can deeply affect their view of themselves and people need to be supported and encouraged through it. Ruth describes how different people helped and strengthened her but it wasn't always easy.

A very worth while purchase indeed. See it as an investment.

I loved this book. It's simple, accessible and insightful.

I don't like to give anything away, but I hope Ruth writes more books soon.
