Evident that the Writer knows Sci Fi 12 Jun 2014

I want to stress that I do not know the author and this is an honest review:
I was absolutely impressed with this book. I have read lots of self-published sci-fi books(kind of my thing), and would say that this one was well above average. He is no Orson Scott Card, or John Scalzi, but his writing style, character development and story are all very engaging and natural.

The book follows a rag team of elite forces that gets caught up in a sinister plan set forth by the equivalent of a King Pin, known as a dynasty. The Dynasty's power goes beyond law and order and so the team faces enemies from all sides. But growing in the background is a deeper and more menacing threat that could erupt at any time. As one would expect, there will probably be another book to follow, but unlike most books, this one has an excellent ending that (at least) leaves you with a sense of having read a good story.

While this may not sound original or super intriguing, I assure you that there is more story going on here than in most books. It is evident that the author thought through his story and really worked hard to develop a world around it. This truly is a sign of an excellent sci-fi writer. Minute details and explanations made this book enjoyable and is worthy of any sci-fi military lover's attention.

When you read the book, make sure to read the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. They are absolutely brilliant and oh so creative. This right here was just one example of why this writer is an above average self-publisher.

Furthermore, at no time did the book feel unnatural. The dialogue was excellent and the character development was done so well that I found myself actually laughing at certain parts or certain replies. This is honestly a rare thing for me.

In the end, I give him 5 stars. This indicates that I will read his next book and that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great book and nice start to what I hope is a book franchise.

Got a free copy from the author for fair and honest review! So ... 20 May 2014

So you can read from the blurb this is more than likely going to be a series of books. Now sometimes I hate that because it leaves you hanging between books. Waiting 12+ months can be very annoying. One of the good things which I liked alot about this book was you weren't left hanging at the end of the story - you knew there was other things going to kick off but you didnt feel cheated out of not having proper ending. May seem like a small thing but to me its very good thing as its a pet peeve of mine! other authors should take note!

This is very much in the style of "broke future" of private security firms/mercs for hire etc. It reminded me of Drew Karpyshyn Mass Effect series of books. If you enjoyed those you will defo enjoy this book!

bottom line : defo worth a punt on and I look forward to more in the series!

I am an avid reader of the Mil-Scifi genre. I have probably read than 50 books in the genre, So when I say I liked this book you should understand that I have read the best and the worst authors of this genre. I have dealt with slogging through the repititive plot structures, the redundant character references passing for a coherent back story. I have muddled through the same old tropes of the anti-hero, the strong but silent and brooding type...masking his guilt for a perceived offense to personal honor, by becoming that lone wolf whom everyone needs due to his unmatched skill at killing. This author and his book suffer from none of these. I found it to be detalied and straight forward when it needs to be, and purposefully vague when the story is advanced by it's use. Like most books in this genre it begins a little slow but quickly opens up when the various characters start to coelesce. The story was balanced and not at all cumbersome, which is a malady some authors run into when faced with trying to create a world/universe were their story would like to take place. Authors often think that minutiae somehow allows them to propel a story forward, often the reader is mired in so many disjointed ideas it becomes a frustrating read. I enjoyed this book because it was simple and to the point. It has an easy going feel that lends well to the suspension of belief. It has just enough "if" mixed into it that your mind allows itself to be lead and to let the story unfurl at very nice pace. I was surprised by this because I caught myself wanting more of the story. That just does not happen to me very often anymore. Well lets get down to brass tacks. Can I recommend this book? I surely can whole heartedly. It's a fantastic and interesting read that will keep you engaged in the world and the situations that Mr.Best has created. I can't wait for the next installment. Aloha.

Sci-Fi Action Movie 6 Jun 2014
By jllama - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Note: The author provided me a free epub copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

If you are looking for a fast-paced, quick-reading sci-fi action book, I don't think you will be disappointed with AlphaShock. Sure, it has it's flaws... the first couple chapters are surprisingly boring, and after building up nicely the action drops off again at the end of book one. It's almost like the first third of the book is just a really long introduction. The character development is also disappointing... even by the end of the book I was still thinking of the characters as "the big buy" and "the guy with the shock gun". Still, if you go into the book with the right frame of mind you should really enjoy this one. It's a big budget sci-fi action move in book format, full of explosions and gadgets and gunfights, perfect for kicking off the summer.
