With Tristan still in Ireland and Calum and Deidre marrying and moving towards
Canada the episodes actually improve because the stories are concentrating on
new characters and customers.

DVD navigation is similar to series 5 and therefore not as good as with series 4.

This series - filmed 1990 - features a very tragic episode if you are familiar
with the real people behind the fictional vets.
In the first episode Siegfried convinces James that the three vets should
all sleep in Skeldale House to revive the good old times as long as the wives
are out of town. But it doesn't work out. Calum escapes into the pub and James
and Siegfried do not know what to talk about actually, so they go to bed early
and Siegfried brings his TV set to spend the evenings alone in front of it.
In real life Siegfried not only survived his younger brother (died 1988), but
also lost his long-term friend James and his wife in the same year (1995).
He decided - like in the episode - to live in the real "Skeldale House" again,
where the son of James lived and worked as a vet at that time.
But he did otherwise, instead of looking forward to a future of
lonely evenings (spent in front of the TV ?) he committed suicide.

We have the whole collection up to date. They don't make them like this anymore as H&S wouldn't allow. Actors are 'hands on' with the animals which make the series extremely realistic without any harm - nothing has been produced in this way since. Its shows their ongoing lives through many stages. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad but always showing a realistic approach to the harsh realities they had to face. Its more like reality TV at its very best. You must get the whole series though to appreciate.

Another absorbing series of the woes and joys of the Yorkshire Dales veterinary James Herriot and his unpredictable and fickle partner Siegfried Farnon. I just missed Tristan Farnon, but I believe he will be back in Series 7. Love it!

We continue to enjoy this ageless series of veterinary practice in the raw. Read my review of series 7 for more comment.

English country settings and lots of animals - just my cup of tea, especially as I am an ex-pat in Italy
