Very strange looking at the range of the reviews for this book, many loving it, some hating it. So I thought I'd add my two pennies.

While it does have some faults, and while I haven't had to use the ALE stuff much, this is the nearest thing to a SAP EDI bible there is. I was new to EDI and this book got me through an implementation, quite literally. It is detailed and covers all the topics I have looked at in depth. It brings together all the things you need to know and would otherwise have to spend ages piecing together from SAP documentation or not be able to find at all. I still refer to it regularly, as do others in my company.

I am also on several SAP/EDI mailing lists, and when questions are posed by beginners this is always the book they are referred to by the experts.

I have bought several books covering different SAP topics, and quite frankly this is the ONLY one that's half decent (and I include the Kasturi book in this).

If you are doing a SAP EDI implementation, then you need this book.

Fantastic book...that's what came to my mind when I finished reading this book. It's one of those rare books where each line makes so much of sense to an expert yet crystal clear to even new comers. This books covers almost everything that an ALE/EDI consultant should know. It starts with the basic concepts of EDI, ALE, IDocs and Workflow while explaining the typical business processes involved. This should help people aspiring to get into this field. Then it dwells more deeply on the concepts of ALE/EDI configuration (Customer Distribution Model, RFC destinations, ports & partner profile), Message Control, Workflow configuration, Idoc programming/reduction/extension and so on. Even a seasoned ALE/EDI/IDoc expert would find a few techniques/tips/work-arounds that are really helpful in practicality.

The presentation is really cool and is enhanced greatly by neat diagrams (nowhere else did I find such explanatory diagrams, certainly neither in SAP documentation nor in their training material...perhaps it came from the author's years of practice and teaching!).

Finally, I have been working in ALE/EDI/IDocs for the past 1.5 years and I feel that whatever I learnt so far has been, more or less, consolidated into this ALE/EDI/IDocs bible!!!

The appendix has lists of transaction codes, lists of programs and list of other information that already makes the book worth the money.
