Product Description

explores the history of some of America s best known and best loved engines. In the first comprehensive tribute to the American Locomotive Company, railway historian Brian Solomon offers a collection of glorious historic photos and modern colour images together with curious details, firsthand accounts and other unique research to examine the rich heritage of Alco from its magnificent steam-powered Atlantics, Big Boys and Challengers to more recent iconic diesel and electric creations. All these books will delight railfans as well as anyone interested in the history of America. --New Classics, December, 2009

Between 1901 and 1969, Alco locomotives were among the best known in North America. The Book covers both the steam and diesel locomotives built by the company. The auothr starts with steam development, covering the design and development of the 'Mikados' 'Atlantics' 'Mallets' and others and goes on to the post-war giants of the railroads - 'Hudsons' 'Challengers' and 'Big boys'. Moving on to disels the book delas with the range from switchers to the fast passenger express locomotives. As usual, with brian Soloman's books, the phootgtaphy is good and often stunning. At the back of the book there is a good bibliography and an excellent index to help you trace specific subjects. --Model Railway Express, November, 2009

5.0 out of 5 stars Brian Solomon "a safe pair of hands". 8 Nov 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
If you're reading this you're obviously a Rail Fan. As it's about Alco you're obviously a Railroad Fan?

Anyone who buy's railroad books will know that Brian's name is on a good few titles. This volume is well presented and the quality of the paper and the photographs is first rate. Voyageur Press has produced a title here at better quality and half the price of some well known railroad book publishers. It's difficult to produce a book which contains both written reference material and excellent pictures. Often the pictures suffer, sometimes compromised by crossing the binding to accommodate a better text flow. I'm glad to say this title avoids this layout feature so that the pictures all exist within a single page. Not a compromise with a book of this size.

The title is split roughly 45/55 % between Alco's Steam Loco's and their Diesels.

It's hard to compete with the volume of Railroad Pictures available online nowadays but what the book can't compete with in volume, it more than makes up for in quality. One point of note is that this book does not contain any scale drawings (modellers real and virtual note!) but then Kalmbach pretty much covered that in their Locomotive Cyclopedia's already.

If you like books and Railroads ......You'll want this title in your library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any avid rail buff 19 Mar 2010
By Midwest Book Review - Published on
ALCO LOCOMOTIVES is a pick for any library strong in railroad and transportation history. It's the first comprehensive, illustrated history of the Alco and follows its development from its founding company in 1848 to its evolution through 1969. Packed with color locomotive photos and history, this survey of both contemporary and vintage locomotives is a 'must' for any avid rail buff.

The book had information on the early steam locomotives that I needed. The history and background information on the company was also interesting.

While not the definitive tome on Alco, this book is a must for anyone interested in their history, and the pictures are super. If you are interested in Alco locomotives, steam and diesel, you should get this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars More pictures, fewer words needed. 13 Jan 2013

I was hoping for more photos and larger ones. Too much gab for my tastes and the Big Boy seemed an afterthought and didn't receive enough attention. Perhaps reading it on my iPad wasn't putting it in it's best light. The photos appear really small on the iPad screen. They need to be full page.

the company which smartly combines a number of early, small locomotive builders into one of the countries largest locomotive builders.
