Ordered this Alba PCD604 CD & MP3 player on a Wednesday and it was in my home, post free the following Tuesday morning. Very pleased with the item. It came complete with earphones and batteries. Just had to put a MP3 cd into the machine and hey presto, all the Beatles LPs on one disk and hours of listening. This player can charge rechargeable batteries as well! I heartily recommend this as a low cost, incredibly useful gadget. It is ideal for listening to audio books (downloaded from www.audiobooksforfree.com) and would be ideal for the elderly and/or infirm for this purpose.

For the price this works well. It plays mp3 cds and normal audio cds (including cdr and cdrw) almost without a hitch.

The unit is reasonably attractive in a silver plasticy way. Apart from the track control buttons (on the surface of the top cover rather than on the edge of the unit) and lcd there is a separate stereo line out jack for connecting the unit to an amp, a hold switch, headphone jack and volume dial. There is no inline remote. The only htings included with the unit are cheap in ear headphones and a short manual.

The mp3 function is basic, there is no display of id3 info (track title, artist etc.) or subdirectory names (they are numbered 1,2,3 etc in alphabetical order) Songs in the subdirectories are played in alphabetical order (numbers first).

There is no support for m3u playlists written to the disks (which is a shame), but you can manually program a one time playlist.

Playback of just one subdirectory or all the mp3's on the disk can be specified.

One subdir, all tracks on the disk or the tracks in a one time playlist can be placed into random or repeat mode.

There is an intro mode which plays the first 10 seconds of each track to help you find a specific song, but this isn't much use, with 200 songs on a cd it could take 30 minutes to find a song this way!

I haven't had the unit long enough to gague battery life, it can charge recharable batteries when connected to a power supply (not included)

I've had one burnt cdr audio cd refuse to play after the first few tracks, the cd played in another player with occasional skips so I'd say the alba is a little more sensitive to disk errors than most.

Apart from this, with esp switched on I haven't heard it skip once. In all I'm happy with my purchase, just don't expect too much. It's perfect for audio books and mp3 mix cds as long as you don't need to find a specific song. Sound quality it good to my ears but I'm no audiophile.

I too have experienced the skipping mp3 problem, however this only seems to happen on unfinalised multi-session cds. If you author a normal cd and finalise it (means you can't partially fill the cd then add more to it later) the mp3 function works fine.

As the unit works with rewritable cd's this isn't too much of a problem - I just use cd-rws, if I want to add to them I wipe the entire disk and start again rather than adding an extra session.
