these are the most accurate set of headphones I have ever had the pleasure of owning!! my profession is opera singing and believe me my ears are the most critical on the planet!!!. I have listened to them on an ipod and through my setup at home and was interested to hear that another reviewer did not think they were great on an ipod. my first listening was on the ipod and i was blown away at how impressive they were, amazing sound like nothing ive ever heard before , these are somthing else! the soundstage is incredible with highly accurate highs , mid and bass extension( another criticism from other reviewers is lack of bass maybe they were listening to the wrong phones these have a beautiful low accurate tightly controlled low end). the music seems to have more pace and realism, i even heard on a particular recording people walking across the floor on a classical recording and coughing, oh yes everything is picked up on these and thats what theyve been designed for proper studio moniters( Quincey Jones was absolutely right to put his name to this brand I can tell you he knows what hes talking about!!!!!!). The only problem with these is that they are very hard to drive so even for your ipod they need a portable amp otherwise you wont be able to turn them up very loud. my suggestion is the fiio e7 at 150 mw but if you can wait the new fiio e17 which will be more powerfull at 99.00. having tried them all these are an excellent choice and are rated at 250mw.( they will be available within the next few weeks!!). I cannot believe the quality of sound you can get on the move with an ipod I am so happy with this setup!!. My next move is to upgrade the cable to a better one and see if we can get any further improvements . As for burning in these are amazing out of the box if I get any improvements Ill be really happy.BUY THESE WITH ABSOLUTE CONFIDENCE THEY ARE UTTERLY SUPERB WELL DONE AKG!!! CANT WAIT FOR YOUR NEXT STEP UP!!!

I was upgrading from a pair of Senheiser HD595, decent cans worth £160. Comparing the two was night and day. Through the AKGs it was as if all the characteristics of the Senheisers had been lifted to reveal the source material underneath. The sound was more open, instruments had room to breath, vocals were crystal clear, and detail levels superb. Build quality is excellent, the two leads supplied are detachable and different lengths to suit your listening requirements, the headband real leather, and the quality of the white finish is very classy. Yes you'll look like a plonker wearing these but as they're opened backed and so very leaky you'll not be wearing them on the bus. It's worth investing in a dedicated headphone amp to get the best results, this kind of gear is wasted on the poor quality headphone amps that are built in to most integrated amplifiers. I use these with the Pro-Ject Headbox ii which is a good match for quality and budget. Also these headphones arrived a few days ahead of the expected delivery date so happy days.

After reading just about every review I could find on the internet, I decided these Headphones were the ones for me and took the plunge. Having owned Sennheisers and Beyerdynamics in the past, I felt something of a traitor defecting to AKG. It proved a good move though. I had read of several deficiencies in the sound, comfort and strangely about the sound leakage. More about that later. Also its detractors complained that it was a less than perfect match for the ipod/mp3 as its source. That to me is a strange complaint as it's not really designed for that purpose - think; going to the supermarket to do your weekly shopping in a Ferrari - achievable perhaps, but certainly not wise nor practical.

Most importantly, I'm approaching my late fifties and sadly the hearing range of frequencies I enjoyed in my youth is beginning to suffer. (Remember when you used to be able to hear the 15.6kHz signal carrier frequency of your television? - A long distant memory for me now). What I find I need is a clean and powerful treble which always conveys the soul of the music for me. This I have found in abundance in the Q701s. Mids are generous too and the commonly criticised lack of bass is just not true. It may not be ear-shattering but it's there and it's precise. Certainly not as powerful as the Beyers I've owned, but a booming bass just isn't that important to me anymore. Sound leakage is indeed there, but that is what an open design is, and to that end the music enjoys an openness that is hard to better.

A brilliant sounding headphone without comfort is of course a non-starter. These are truly cleverly designed and comfort around the ear is very good indeed.

These are some of the best sounding headphones that ever touched my ears. The sound is just so... clear, almost analytic, it has that great stage feeling to it. It handles most of my favorite records just fine (jazz, acoustic, rock, etc), while some of the poor(-er) quality records sound kind of awful - but that is something I've already gone over since my home audio system upgrade. I play them over the Bravo Audio tube amp (12AU7) and Behringer UCA222 external audio card.
-Comparing them to AKG-271, these are a lot more comfortable to wear, earpads are awesome, and sound is a lot more detailed and open.
-Comparing them Sennheiser HD650 I've owned for 5 years now, they are as comfy, and the sound is somewhat more balanced - Senns have that sweet, but somewhat muffled sound, which I have grown accustomed to, but it's gone out of favor now. BTW, during these 5 years HD-650 have completely worn out (earpads, the net over the speakers are barely holding together, the cable has been repaired like 3 times already, the headband broke after a year in usage, though nothing duct tape won't fix).
-Also, compared them to Sennheiser RS-220 and HD-700 a few weeks ago, and while HD-700 sounded somewhat similar, the build quality (see the above HD-650 experience) and the accompanying price was a deal breaker for me.

I spend like 8-12 hours per day using them, usually play music in lossless formats (ape, flac), and also use them for computer games - and they put a smile on my face whenever I put them on. Highly recommended!
