Product Description

Product Description

Of course 'NC' stands for 'noise cancelling', but it could also stand for 'no contest', because when it comes to pure, undisturbed sound, the AKG K495 NC headphones deliver high-quality performance and active noise control that are second to none.

Durable and easy to charge through the USB, these top-of-the-line headphones create a perfect audio world: you get all the sound you want, and none of the sound you don't.

Avoid using headphones with the volume turned up for an extended period of time. Doing so can damage your hearing. It is advisable to keep the volume at a moderate level at all times. For your own safety, please do not use when driving or cycling.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good sound, annoying rattle. 14 Jun 2012
By samboy
Being unable to find any retailer with stock of the smaller K490 phones, I purchased the K495. First set of these headphones had to be returned due to intermittent loss of sound in left can. Liked the sound the replacement headphones produced in both NC and non-NC mode. Solid feel and well built. The NC switch on the left can appears to be designed more for visual impact rather than practical use - it was awkward and stiff to use. The switch also rattled a bit, so if you move your head when listening (eg walking) in NC mode, a metallic rattle was produced by the loose fitting switch which I found to be irritating. Not good enough for the price. Returned second set for refund. Will buy the K490 phones when available as the NC switch appears to be more practical.

Reviewer: Not audiophile
-Music taste preference: Hard Rock, Fusion, Pop, Classical
-Scull size: XL
Device: AKG K495nc hooked into an iPhone 5
Sound:
-With NC on: Dynamic and exciting with prominent base. Aeroplane white noise is greatly reduced on ca 75% volume.
-With NC off: Flatter response but as dynamic and exciting.
Sound Overall: Dynamic and exciting sound which suits all genres that I've tried these with; Jazz, Pop, Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal and Classical. Compared to the around-ear Sennheiser Momentum that has gotten much praise in the blogs and on other tech-oriented websites, the AKG K495nc headphones offer higher volume, sound more engaging, especially for Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal (Deep Purple, Yngwie Malmsteen, Rainbow). Each of the headphones has a distinct personality. I imagine the AKGs as Beethoven's choice, while the Sennheisers would be Mozart's. Both the Sennheiser Momentum and the AKG K495nc headphones sound accurate IMO, with the Sennheisers having a slight edge with cleaner more refined sound reproduction. As the Sennheiser Momentum headphones only offer passive NC (Noise Cancelation) I will not do a comparison in that department. The Momentum headphones are great for Classical, Jazz and Pop music, but where your music demands handling quick tempo and distorted guitar and organ sounds, the Sennheisers fall short as they sound too mellow and dare I say a little dull. This is where the AKGs shine. The mids are more prominent and (Hard) Rock tracks sound simply like Rock and not "Popish" as they do on the Sennheiser Momentum. Base is satisfying for Rock and Pop lovers, but perhaps a tad too much for some Jazz listeners and a tad too tame for baseheads.

5.0 out of 5 stars First class performance and build 16 Sep 2012
With very few reviews out there I was scepticle to say the least, I needed a pair of headphones that I could use at home and also on the move. The AKG K495's are built extremely well with a good quality feel to them. They can be charged via a USB port which lasts in experience upto about 34 hours at a reasonable volume. Un like other noise cancelling headphones, these work without the mode engaged, although at a cost of loosing some bass response. They sound amazing! The full range appears smooth and detailed and gives both detailed highs and mids, the bass is punchy and crisp. These are not what I would call a deep bass headphone, but if your into that deep rumbling bass then these may not be for you, I prefer my bass punchy and crisp and these provide that in abundance. They come with a removable headphone cable (short) and a long one, half a metre and one full metre. The cable appears to be of good quality and is fabric covered and its terminated with a gold plug. The headphone padding has memory foam and sits well on my head and feels comfy, the sound cancelling is excellent and using my air conditioner as an example, it removed all essence of the noise coming from it and I enjoyed playing with it by turning it off and on to prove the point to my wife. Overall I'm very please with these headphones and un like the other reviews on here I had no problem with any rattling of the unit or of any pressure effects on my ears. These are premium cans that sound amazing and give excellent NC performance. Im extreamly please with this purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars broken after 2 months 12 Jun 2013
By Arno
Never dropped it once, yet the plastic part (right below where it says AKG 495 NC) broke after only two months. Just look at the user comments on cnet reviews, clearly a case of bad engineering. Although you can't see it, the plastic part is actually quite thin and prone to wear.
Other than that the sound quality was amazing (not amazed by NC though - maybe my expectations were too high, but I could clearly understand people talking directly to me whith music off / NC on).

2.0 out of 5 stars 2nd time unlucky 16 Sep 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
My most disappointing headphone purchase so far - promised so much, but - I feel there is a blatant design flaw with the left side housing (that holds the electronics / battery for the noise cancellation circuit).. As soon as you put these on your head, you can hear on the left side, the driver diaphragm compressing (you'll hear it as a crunching sound), the first pair I had was broken from the get-go (maybe a previously returned product!?) with a massive channel imbalance / distortion on the bass / distant sounding, got a replacement - and, whilst this sounded a fair bit better, the driver crunching noise was still apparent when putting on the head, and taking off, so - I have returned (ironically, in nearly five years of transactions on Amazon, this is my first refund request)...

...All of this means, even if you get a good set from the get go, odds on, with the driver diaphragn crunching in and out due to the air pressure on the left side, it is pretty much a given that these won't sound good for very long..

Very disappointing from AKG, especially with how good their Q701s are :(
