4.0 out of 5 stars A good tool for learners. 27 Nov. 2012

This app lets you play against the machine or allows you to use the tablet as a board set to play against a friend, without the fiddly pieces of an actual set. I am still however learning to play the game.

In my case it is an excellent way of passing time and trying to grapple with the subtleties of the game.

This is a good game for a freebie. I love playing Backgammon with my family at home and this is a good way to tighten up my skills before hand. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable 10 Dec. 2012

This is a enjoyable implementation of the game of backgammon. Good, easy to see board for those of us with less than perfect eyesight. I like the sound the stones make as they slide around the board. A very good app.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fun but unchallenging gameplay 29 Jun. 2014
I play a lot of backgammon, and have tried most of the best backgammon apps for Apple and Android. For serious and professional players, I could only recommend "Backgammon NJ", which plays a fearsome game, is almost unbeatable at the hardest levels, and has excellent single-swipe counter movement. (The very best software out there is probably "Snowy" but that runs on PC only.) For casual players and beginners though, this one from AI Factory is pretty good.

Its easier levels play a simple game that may be beaten with little skill, as it tends to make very silly moves and leave blots everywhere. If you are a reasonably proficient player, the hardest level is the only option to choose, at which level it generally puts up a reasonable fight but with but with predictable strategy every time.

Its gameplay is generally good, but always plays a forward strategy. It rarely builds a prime anywhere but in or near its home board. This means that if you hold counters back for an attack, it never bothers to block them in. Its gameplay has other much more annoying weaknesses, too. If you are thrashing it to a win in gammon or backgammon, it never bothers to get its counters to its home board to minimize the loss. Instead, it marches each counter home, one at a time, stupidly leaving one behind to gift you a gammon or backgammon. It should have the sense to move that counter forward to minimize the points loss.

It only ever resigns if you double and it reckons it is in a bad position. However, if you are thrashing it to a definite win, it insists on playing to the bitter end, even if it could cut its loss by resigning. Also, it rarely uses doubling as an attack strategy. It never seems to notice when you are building a large block or prime, or if you have a closed board.

3.0 out of 5 stars well designed but CPU a poor opponent 7 May 2013
By Nicola

This is the clearest layout I've seen for backgammon. But even on max difficulty the CPU is an amateur tactician, e.g. doubling you when it's got nothing to gain, leaving pieces in your home board when moving them would avoid a backgammon. So it's good for learner players but a frustration for those with experience.
