Nadel does not seem to get the recognition she deserves as a top notch crime writer. The Ikmen series has been generally very intriguing and unusual, but she has perhaps realised that it is now running out of steam (q.v. the last very disappointing and implausible 'Dance With Death') so is now moving on to a new series featuring Blitz-era East End undertaker Francis Hancock. This is the second, and is every bit as good as 'Last Rights'. Nadel's sense of time and place is outstanding. We really do experience something of what it was like to live through those wartime days. And the mystery itself is pretty good too. The sympathetic portrayal of the lives and customs of the Roma rings true, and all in all this is a very satisfying read.

I'd recommend this book to lovers of atmospheric & well-plotted crime novels. This is the second in the series featuring Hancock, an undertaker, and set during the Blitz. I enjoyed the first book, Last Rights, but this surpasses that one; the plotting meshes together more convincingly and it moves a lot faster. Nadel's characterisation is also excellent, with the result that I came to care about the characters. In addition, the book offers an insight into the times within which it is set - particularly in relation to the Blackshirts and the Gypsy community.

Nice easy read, with a bit of tension built in. Nadel won the Silver Dagger award, so she knows how to construct intrigue and narrative into a good pace. Set in London during the Blitz of 1940, the story centres around an undertaker who finds himself investigating the apparent supernatural murder of a young gypsy girl. There's murder, conspiracy, is a reminder that there were Nazi sympathisers in Britain too, and is really excellent at bringing out that loyal allegiance to protect those within family communities. Especially true in London during that time. So you've got a bit of sympathetic social history too.
