Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Spider-Man. He spins webs, crawls up walls and wears natty tight fitting latex suits to work. Happily he also appears in a rather nifty new 3-D adventure on the PC--and it's rather fabulous.

A port of the popular console title, Neversoft's newest release is a brilliant tribute to one of Marvel's most famous comic creations. Taking on the title role and supported by a huge cast, it's your job to take on the forces of evil-doers including Dr Octopus, Rhino and Venom through 30 levels of top-notch action.

The attention to detail is superb with the motion-captured wall-crawler capable of swinging between skyscrapers, clinging to ceilings and taking on henchmen with a wide array of web-based assaults ranging from run-of-the-mill web attacks through to hurled balls of webbing material that cause huge damage to the opposition.

The overall feel of the game really captures the essential spirit of the subject matter. From cartoon-cover intro screens to an introduction by Smilin' Stan Lee you get the feeling this is a real labour of love for the development team.

Controls are nicely done and while a little clumsy to begin with soon become second nature. Camera angles too are pretty good and only occasionally do you lose sight of the central character thanks to an unfortunately placed pillar or low ceiling.

The puzzles, such as they are, require a little thought--but not too much--leaving the emphasis on leaping around (the inside and outside of buildings) and battering the living daylights out of anyone wearing spandex. This is top stuff, and a must have for all comic book fans. --Chris Russell

Manufacturer's Description

Once bitten, twice the guy. Thanks to the bite of an irradiated spider, budding boy genius Peter Parker suddenly finds himself turned into a superhuman with the powers of a spider. The story, told through cutscenes, voice-overs, and in-game dialogue, opens at a conference held by the renowned Dr. Otto Octavius, who's preparing to demonstrate his latest invention. While the good doctor pontificates about the virtues of progress through technology, Spider-Man suddenly leaps onto the stage and makes off with Octavius' device before the assembled crowd. This game takes classic superhero melodrama and unashamedly runs with it.After the game's mysterious opening sequence, you begin your heroic adventures in New York City. You start by foiling a bank heist and then move up to greater challenges like evading a missile-firing police helicopter that chases after the hero. Later, you'll fight swarming lizardmen on top of a rushing subway train and battle alien symbiotes in the Daily Bugle. All told, there are eight main locations, like Manhattan's rooftops, a high-rise bank, and the New York City sewer system, making for around 30 3D levels in all. The game primarily revolves around platform jumping, a little stealth, and beating up lots and lots of bad guys. During your adventures, you'll meet fellow heroes like Daredevil, Black Cat, and the Human Torch who'll offer tips and villains like Scorpion, Rhino, and Venom who'll beat you to a pulp if you're not quick with your web shooters… At its best, Spider-Man immerses you in the colorful, enjoyably implausible Marvel Comics universe, and swinging between skyscrapers and firing off webs offer plenty of adventurous. If you've ever wanted to play hero, Spider-Man will let you do it!

4.0 out of 5 stars stupid-cool ultimate marvel hero game, 24 Nov 2001
This review is from: Spider-Man (Video Game)
Never has the esscence of a comic book hero been captured so well. The game can be ridiculously easy at times, but the sheer joy of actually being a part of the action allows you to forgive this, and anyway, Spidey is a super-hero, you can expect him to take on all comers, win, and spout witticisms whilst he is doing so. Initially the controls were a little difficult, resulting in plunging down onto the streets head first when you forget which button is used for a webline. One tip though, is to use it on kids mode which combines jump and webline into one button, making swinging across the city an absolute joy. At first the controls don't allow you to aim for the building you want very well, so I find it more effective to leap off the building you are on and turn to your target in mid air, just like the in the spidey comics. When this is all complete with the extra cheat codes, allowing you to become the scarlet spider, or several different incarnations of the spiderman (including symbiote costume), or even swing around as peter parker in street clothes, then you can virtually act out the cartoon, and have a blast doing it. Go out and get this today.

5.0 out of 5 stars The comic comes to life!, 24 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Spider-Man (Video Game)
I bought this expecting it to be a pretty wooden rendering of a vibrant and flexible comic character... not so. One of the greatest things about this game is its faithfulness to the original; Spidey webslings, leaps and wisecracks his way through some of the most varied levels I've seen on any platfom.

No two levels the same, no two bosses can be beaten with the same trick, and Venom is an absolute masterpiece. They're all here, Venom, Carnage, Doc Oc, the Lizard, Rhino, Cat (briefly) and of course Mrs P herself, Mary-Jane.

Web-slinging is made easier by fairly intelligent self-correction, and although the controls take a little while to get used to, that's the price you pay for the game's variety and flexibility. Buy it... or Aunt May gets it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Web-slinging excellence, 22 Sep 2001

What can I say...fantastic! Being a fan of the Spider-man comic, TV series and when the movie comes out, I'll be a fan of that, I had high hopes for the game. Hopes officially justified! The levels a bright and comic-book like, Spidey stays true to his image and the bad guys are definatley bad. Rino Romano (star of Spidey: Unlimited)provideds excellent commentary, some of which made me burst out laughing. The 1 sore point is the controls - a LITTLE difficult. Aside from that, I would recommend this game to ANYONE who has a slight interest in Spider-man.
