From the opening stab of jazz in the titles to the metal coffin chained to our hero's arms, Gungrave roils in hard-boiled cell-shaded.50-calibur style. The gameplay is the heir to many button-masher arcade games. It is an instantly gratifying game experience. Twin guns, Cerberos, pound destruction to swarms of "syndicate" enemies and many objects in your environment. The coffin can be swung around to hammer foes at close range. The shots from Cerberos can ring singly or as a spinning fountain in Grave's "bullet dance." If you can keep a steady stream of destruction, your "beat count" goes up and you generate "demolition shot" special attacks and abilities which can restore life to Grave or serve damage like piping-hot hellfire to his enemies.
Gungrave has been inaccurately compared to Devil May Cry. The games share some style points but otherwise have nothing in common. Grave's controls only permit him the most cursory of acrobatics. He can dive a la Max Payne but his normal gait is the shuffle of a zombie. In an original twist on controller schemes, he can move at regular walking speed via the L3 button (pressing down on the analog stick). Unfortunately this kink quickly loses its novelty as it is difficult to hold and feels as if it's damaging the controller. Unfortunately, the instant gratification this game brings is short lived. At about two hours of play it clocks in as one of the shortest, as well as most repetitive, games out there. --Ashley Pond V

Every now and then Japanese developers jump into bed with a major Anime talent to produce what is essentially a vanity vehicle akin to John Travolta being allowed to make Battlefield Earth, with much the same results in quality. So here we have Gungrave and the teaming up of SEGA developers Red Entertainment and cult Anime artist Yashiro Nightow, creator of the esteemed Trigin series. The end result is a crossover of Spawn-like blasting and Nightow’s own love affair with the Western, as six-shooters are transported to neo-Tokyo after passing through the grave.As you would expect from this collaboration the action is slick and very much in the limited arcade mould, whilst the style and story evoke the best Anime animation has to offer. The plot unfolds at a fair pace as cel-animated cut-scenes blend seamlessly into the cel-shaded gameplay. The story itself is a somewhat standard Anime plot of betrayals, lost innocence and the struggle of a gifted killer brought back Now, although the game can be completed in just over an hour there is a general skill to finishing it in style and unlocking all of the secrets, such as character art, the movie scenes played in full and extra gameplay options like Blood, ‘Bullet Time’ and new camera angles. The key is to play with style and flair. To run through levels using the dives, jump and dodge moves to take out the enemies in the most dramatic way possible. Though not exactly riddled with depth, fans of Anime movies will enjoy the tussle to discover ever more flamboyant ways to kill people. As previously stated, Gungrave is basically a vanity game made by Anime fans for Anime fans which sticks to its guns to create a shallow shoot-’em-up with an inspired styling.
