From the Manufacturer

Destiny

From the creators of Halo and the company that brought you Call of Duty.

In Destiny you are a Guardian of the last city on Earth able to wield incredible power. Explore the ancient ruins of our solar system, from the red dunes of Mars to the lush jungles of Venus. Defeat Earth's enemies. Reclaim all that we have lost. Become legend.

Everything changed with the arrival of the Traveler. Long ago, it breathed new life into our system. Rain washed over Mars. Fresh air cleansed the skies over Venus. Soon after, humanity raced into the black, and colonised these newly remade worlds. It was a time of miracles – a great Golden Age.

Game modes

Crucible: competitive multiplayer

Enter the Crucible to hone your competitive skills against other Guardians in arenas that span the solar system. Victory will earn you rewards and reputation.

Patrol: on-demand adventure

Revisit the worlds you have discovered to aid the City in their exploration efforts, seek out valuable resources in order to upgrade your weapons and gear, and link up with other brave Guardians roaming the frontier in search of action and adventure.

Strike: cooperative multiplayer

Form a Fireteam, three Guardians strong. Infiltrate an enemy stronghold, cutting through wave after wave of enemy ranks emboldened by their fierce, battle-hardened leaders. Confront an enemy worthy of only the bravest Guardians.

Tower: third-person social space

Home of the Guardians, the Tower is a third-person social hub where you can regroup, rearm, and form new alliances before venturing beyond the safety of the City’s walls.

Story: epic campaign

Destiny features a rich, cinematic story, centred on your quest to discover and explore the remains of humanity’s Golden Age. As a Guardian, you must venture beyond our walls into a wild and dangerous frontier, and take the fight to ancient evil forces hell bent on our destruction.

Raid: cooperative adventure

Raids are the ultimate test of your strength. Team up with your fellow Guardians and take on huge bosses and tough puzzles to unlock exclusive loot. If the pressure is too much, you can leave and resume the fight later.

Story

Our Golden Age

Everything changed with the arrival of the Traveler. Long ago, it breathed new life into our system. Rain washed over Mars. Fresh air cleansed the skies over Venus.

Soon after, humanity raced into the black, and colonised these newly remade worlds. It was a time of miracles – a great Golden Age.

Hope in the darkness

It did not last. The Traveler had an ancient enemy. A powerful darkness that found us here on Earth, and nearly destroyed us.

No one knows exactly what happened in those final moments, but we know this: we survived, and we owe our lives to the Traveler.

We rise again

In our darkest days, Humans, Exos, and Awoken found the Traveler where it made its last stand, low above Earth, silent and immobile.

We built the City – our last – within its protective veil, fighting countless wars to keep its peace. From that dark age, Guardians were born.

A new frontier

Now, a new era has begun, and the only hope for our future lies in unlocking the greatest mysteries of our past. You are a Guardian of the last safe city on Earth, able to wield some of the Traveler's incredible power. You are taking this mantle just as a new day dawns. Titans, Hunters, and Warlocks have finally returned to our long-lost worlds, only to find out we are not alone.

Limited Edition

The Destiny Limited Edition comes with a steelbook case, the Guardian Folio, and bonus digital content including a unique ghost skin, exclusive player emblem, and exclusive player ship skin. The Guardian Folio contains the Arms and Armament field guide, postcards from the Golden Age, and an antique star chart.

4.0 out of 5 stars One for the Grinders 9 Jan. 2015

If you're looking to buy Destiny then this is the edition to get as it comes with the first two expansions (The Dark Below & House of Wolves) which retail at £34.99 for both so (currently) at forty pounds it's a no-brainer really. If you decide down the line you're not keen then you can get most of your money back selling these alone. The LE is a nice set, particularly the art cards, weapons manual/art book and the steel case all in a chunky box with other DLC and bits and bobs.

As for the game itself it has divided opinions but I think you have to play it for yourself to make up your own mind. The story (or lack thereof) is quite a joyless experience at times with much repetition and very few cut scenes or dialogue to flesh it out. The thing that kept me coming back was the excellent gunplay set in quite stunning locations, particularly Venus. The AI is terrific, no running into walls or floating corpses here and the FPS mechanics are spot on. The "rechargeable" grenade and special (in my case, the fabulous hunter's Golden Gun) is a good innovation that works really well. Skill tree choices are quite limited but keep things simple and you have to love the brutal but easy to use R2 melee.

To play the game you must be online (looking at you Lizard Squad....) and in doing so you often come across other players who may or may not help you and you can celebrate a victory with a little jig together afterwards - a rare concession to Destiny humour. The pure PvP online i.e. in the Crucible (not the one in Sheffiled where old men play snooker) is a different gravy and one that will have the COD-ders drooling over their shotties. Even on my slow connection I experienced no dropouts or lag (or maybe I did, that's why I died a lot!) which is testament to the excellent Bungie servers.

4.0 out of 5 stars I personally love this game 1 Jan. 2015

I personally love this game. I know that a lot of people hate it for reasons such as minimal storyline, cashcow company milking consumers,
repetitive grinding for better weapons/armour etc. Well in my opinion they do have a point, but if you want to play an awesome FPS that looks stunning, is great to play and sucks you into that otherworld atmosphere then look no further.
People rated Killzone 2 so highly, I thought that was a very average game. Destiny is a very good game, it could have been a classic if certain aspects were done differently but all in all its in my top ten FPS of all time, n' that has Goldeneye and Perfect Dark in there so you know what I'm talking about.

I ordered the limited edition version, such a bargain at 39.99. It was delivered the next day and is an absolute steal as it contains the dlc 'the Dark Below' and 'House of Wolves', each expansion pack would set you back 19.99 if bought seperately. Also included is limited edition dlc, Vanguard armoury dlc. Amazing value at this price.

Why did I give Destiny a 3 star rating?
Simply because it is about as basic a game as any you can name from about ten years ago.

Most missions in the game are made up of having to go here and do this, go there and do that, hold off three waves of enemies until I complete this, rinse and repeat.
Even the story has you asking a lot more questions than it answers.
Before abruptly ending, leaving you wondering what happened to the rest of the game.

In a lot of ways you can't help but feel that the game has been cut by the developers (by order of the publisher Activision) so it could be sold back to the customers later as downloadable content.
And in this game you get that feeling a lot.

With all that being said however, there is something about this game that has you constantly coming back for more.
Graphically it isn't the best of games, but it is more visually appealing than it first appears as little details leave wondering about the possibilities of how life was before the "collapse".
The cooperative multiplayer is excellent as you can play the game through completely with your friends, and also put your skills to the test in what is called The Crucible.

By far though, one of the best aspects of this game is its soundtrack.
Simply put, it is absolutely sublime.
Easily one of the best soundtracks to a game that I've heard for a long time.

This game on first appearance does only warrant an average score of 2.5 out of 5.
And I would have given it exactly that score if I was able to.
But this score is set to increase in my opinion, as Destiny is going to evolve over time.
And it is a game that is set to be supported for the next ten years.

This game launched after a huge, possibly unprecedented, amount of hype. Maybe that's part of the reason that gamers' opinions have been so split. Or maybe it's literally that no matter what, you cannot please everyone. Because I have to say, I'm really surprised at some of the uber-negative reviews. While I accept the game is not "perfect", many people's gripes seem to me to be completely unreasonable.

To throw in my own penny's worth, I think this is a brilliant game. It looks fantastic, of course, with great effects and artwork, and an amazing attention to detail. Some of the scenery is breathtaking - if you get to take a moment to appreciate it. These are derelict cities, factories, alien archaeological sites, and so on where the game is primarily played. I think the scene is set perfectly, and you really get a sense of desolation.

Also, the gaming environments are huge... clever tricks are used to give you that open-world impression. What actually happens is seamless loading between areas on each world, and it works really well. To help speed you on your journey, you have the use of a small hover bike which can be summoned to you from most outdoor areas.

The campaign (Story) mode is supplemented by other game modes, such as a Strike, Raid or a Patrol, all of which take place in the same world. What's really clever is that multiple players will coincide with each other, and may decide to help each other out. In order to remain together within the same "instance" during a mission, they need to join together in a Fireteam, at which point they fully share the same mission and objectives.
