If you like ABC Warriors and/or Clint Langley's art then you can't go wrong. It also serves as a great introduction to the Warriors for those who are not familar with them and their exploits. Langley's art is beautiful as always. Even if you don't buy this book, go and look at some examples of his work. There's not much more I can add. Needless to say I can't wait for the next installment.

I learnt about the ABC Warriors in the "Megacity: series. Then I lost track of them. But recently I saw a preview of the new series; The Volgan War. Patt Mills (the writer) delivers a raw story set in a period of global war. And war is the main theme here so be warned; it's carnage and you can almost smell burned flesh 'n metal!! The ABC Warriors join forces to end this war for once and for all and along the way each of them tells us about their contribution in this nasty war. With these flash-backs the story unfolds and leads us towards a climatic end which is jet to come! What really blew me away are the graphics. Clint Langley has gone a step further and delivers here a masterpiece!! I haven't enjoyed a graphic novel this much since Simon Bisley's Slaine (and other work from the Biz). It's no coincidence that Mills was also responsible for the scenarios for Slaine. Clint Langley also did the artwork for the latest Slaine albums and I consider him one of the best at the moment.
I love these hardcover editions cause they have been manufactured with the highest quality standards. The colors are truly amazing, the printing is superb!!!. I ordered the second and third volume together with this first one and I'm really happy with these masterworks. They make a fine addition to my graphic novel/comics collection!

With his current run on the ABC Warriors Pat Mills is really starting to drive me insane. I've always thought of him as a great ideas man but only an average writer, who often seems to struggle to fit a decent story together once he's conjured up a great high concept (Metalzoic being a classic example of this). His current run on the ABC Warriors seems to be bringing out the worst in him: take away the concept (going back in time to reveal the events of the oft talked about Volgan War) and what you're left with is a seemingly unending stream of very bad puns crowbarred into the script presumably for Pat Mills' amusement.

Dodgy script aside the big draw for most people here is going to be the artwork, which is an often dazzling mix of photos and 3D models reworked in photoshop. On the whole it's as excellent as you'd expect... until there's an action scene. As soon as a fight breaks out over a series of panels the artwork suddenly falls to pieces as Clint Langly hits the Motion Blur filter and it becomes almost impossible to figure out who's doing what to whom. Often the only way to figure out what's gone on is to see who's still talking at the end - anyone who isn't is presumably dead, though who exactly killed them, and how, usually remains something of a mystery.

In short you're buying this for the artwork, not the writing, though for all the dazzle (which is the only thing most people will be interested in) Clint Langly just can't do action scenes - not with any dynamism anyway.
