Rheumatology is one of those medical specialties that seems to have few textbooks at the level of undergraduates and junior doctors. For detailed stuff there are a number of multi-volume tomes but for an introduction and basic knowledge there are few options, and many of those that are available are quite dated. This second edition of the BMJ's ABC of rheumatology does a pretty good job of filling that gap. The book is a collection of summary articles that are published in the British medical journal, each written by experts in the field. As such the book is very informative and you geniunely get the feel of coming to grips with what is a diverse area of medicine. Common diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are of course covered in more detail than the rarer syndromes such as sero-negative arthropathies. Each double page chapter is well structured to give the epidemiology, clinical presentation, pathophysiology and treatment. The limits of what diseases are covered under the heading 'rheumatology' are a bit ambiguous, but this book also deals with diseases such as osteoporosis, which is something important to be aware of in any medical specialty, especially as it can be iatrogenic. If you are looking for a comprehensive source for an essay, then you'll need more than this book, but it is a good introduction so you can structure any further journal searching you need to do. As a medical student I found this book invaluable for reading up before being attached to a rheumatology team and also as an interesting read in its own right. It has few competitors and I have yet to find any book to beat it!
