This is a quality record. Well, you could expect it from Radio 1 sessions some would say; Having been around for quite a while, it's only fair credit to Stereolab. It's difficult to talk about Stereolab as they are quite unique in their "weird" style; but let's try... It's sweet melodic pop, the vocals are very mellow ( and sooooo strange, I'm a french native and if it can make you feel better about it I'm not too sure what they are talking about...) Lyrics are part time shallow and part time very deep, I get quite hooked on but not sure if it's content or vocal harmonies and the harmonics and chorus combine very well. That's the melodic part. It's obsessing, some of the guitar riffs are quite efficient and fast tempo, bringing some edge and last but not least it's full of "Moog" synthetiser effects, if you don't know what is it after listening to Stereolab, it will not take you long to do so.
What I quite liked in this selection, is that the sound is not as polished as their studio work, so it feels more pop, more energetic. If you like Stereolab, buy this you won't be disappointed. If you don't know Stereolab it's quite a good start as it does cover a lot of their sounds, although I would recommend "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" if you can find it as the studio sound make a big difference for this band who excels in sound synthetisis and rythm loops... Five stars well deserved on the quality-price scale, a classic everyone with ecclectic music tastes should own.
