This is a quality record. Well, you could expect it from Radio 1 sessions some would say; Having been around for quite a while, it's only fair credit to Stereolab. It's difficult to talk about Stereolab as they are quite unique in their "weird" style; but let's try... It's sweet melodic pop, the vocals are very mellow ( and sooooo strange, I'm a french native and if it can make you feel better about it I'm not too sure what they are talking about...) Lyrics are part time shallow and part time very deep, I get quite hooked on but not sure if it's content or vocal harmonies and the harmonics and chorus combine very well. That's the melodic part. It's obsessing, some of the guitar riffs are quite efficient and fast tempo, bringing some edge and last but not least it's full of "Moog" synthetiser effects, if you don't know what is it after listening to Stereolab, it will not take you long to do so.
What I quite liked in this selection, is that the sound is not as polished as their studio work, so it feels more pop, more energetic. If you like Stereolab, buy this you won't be disappointed. If you don't know Stereolab it's quite a good start as it does cover a lot of their sounds, although I would recommend "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" if you can find it as the studio sound make a big difference for this band who excels in sound synthetisis and rythm loops... Five stars well deserved on the quality-price scale, a classic everyone with ecclectic music tastes should own.

One for the glove box 26 Sep 2009
Format:Audio CD
If you're a fan of the 'groop' this is an interesting CD. It's live studio sessions stretching from 1991 to 2001 and illustrates how the band progressed over the years from the first four grungy tracks with Gina Morris singing backing vocals to the poppy middle years, and then later jazz influenced work. I like the BBC sessions because you get a more honest live performance but with the benefit of better production (however, the beginning of Golden Ball sounds like a studio mistake!). Stereolab were always a good band live, I recall they used to turn up the volume, especially in the early days! The CD has two versions of Ping Pong, I prefer the latter. All in all a good buy.

ABC at the BBC 8 Nov 2002
Format:Audio CD
If you don't know or own any stereolab then this is an excellant opportunity to richen your collection with the nicest band on the planet (apart from "The Gentle People").
A double disc of classics with stereolab being in their rawest form (and still inoffensive).
Some earlier works are represented with the traditional moog set amongst jangly guitars. You don't even need to know the French language to appreciate Laetitia Sadier's vocals.
Do yourself a favour and introduce Stereolab into your homes.
Even the rain looks happy when Stereolab are playing!
