5.0 out of 5 stars Just your type 25 Oct 2008
By Robin Benson TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
One for the designers I fancy. A delightful pop-up A to Z in a minimalist format that creative folk will love. Almost every letter has a three-dimensional aspect, the exceptions are O,P,Q and R which use a transparent page to turn the letters from one to another. V creates a W using a whole page of mirror foil. Everything else pops up or slides left to right with the letter S having two circles that revolve as the spread is opened.

The look and feel of the book is that it is aimed at grownups. The type is loosely based on Futura presented in black, red and white on black and white spreads. The paper construction is not particularly complex but the overall effect is very creative: like using a common dot for an i and j or a C being flipped over into a D.

I don't see ABC3D in the same context as a kids pop-up book and it's in the completely opposite direction from the stunning creations by Robert Sabuda (and if you are new to pop-ups check Sabuda's extraordinary 'Winters Tale' ISBN 978 0689853630) but as an adult pop-up keepsake it has a lot going for it. Incidentally I'm surprised that there is nothing about Marion Bataille anywhere in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars ABC3D 6 Feb 2009
Format:Hardcover
Purchased copies of this for family members at Christmas - and have never encountered such a lively and delighted response. Everybody loved its simplicity, variety and ingenuity - fell over each other showing their favourite 'letters' as envisaged by the very talented designer. Turned out to be one of the best 'conversation pieces', especially at 'exchanging presents' time on Christmas Day !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple but brilliant 10 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover
I've seen quite a few pop-up books and this book falls into the 'artsy' and ingenious category, a bit like One Red Dot: A Pop-Up Book for Children of All Ages (Classic Collectible Pop-Up). There is no text in the book so you can read it to kids, no matter what their native tongue is. The Dutch edition of this book is more than double the price but the only difference is the back with the description.

The book features one or two letters every two pages and cleverly morphs them into eachother at times.
No doubt not the best way to teach a kid about the letters of the alphabet because it morphs letters. Having said that, they are fascinated by the movements and what the letters represent.

I would recommend it for kids between 4 and 6 who are getting into letters. However anyone who likes pop-up books will enjoy this little gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fiendishly clever! 27 Aug 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is more of a sculpture than a book, and reveals an interesting relationship between those familiar old letters of the alphabet that we see so often that we no longer SEE them. Marion Bataille has looked at them "from scratch" and designed an enchanting experience. I love it! By the way, how on earth are books like this mass-produced?

5.0 out of 5 stars Really special little book 29 Jan 2014
By Bookbag
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Bought this for my brother who is a graphic designer and he absolutely loved it. Each page is a new surprise, it's witty and clever and more for adults than children (just because it's not as durable as children's pop-up books). A great present for anybody who likes typography.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice gimmick 21 April 2013
By James
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
It's a gimmick, plain and simple, but I like gimmicks! Some parts of the book are quite sensitive and need careful handling, which I wish I could tell before I almost tore apart a section.
