Handy little book,
This review is from: AA Twinpack Madeira (AA TwinPack Guides) (Paperback)
I really like this range of guides (I have 5 different countries)especially as you get a very good road map in the back of the plastic wallet. There is a wealth of useful information and history of the island included in the book including a few phrases.
The only downside with it is the sad fact that the AA series are, I believe no longer in print so the ones still around are a little out of date. The guide is still worth buying though.

Firstly, it's cheap and there are lots of photos and it has a separate map. Good. However the map is of the entire island when a detailed streetmap of Funchal would have been nice so you could work out where your hotel is before you arrive (there is a very small simplified map near the end). There are the top 25 sites with one page to each of them, so it is a shame that so much of the limited space is used with telling you how wicker is made or the history of the island when it could give you more practical information such as where to buy bus tickets, how to get to places by public transport etc. Some of the information is either wrong or misleading. For instance it tells you that before the Via Rapido was built it used to take 90 minutes to get to Ribeira Brava but now it only takes 20 mins. Well if you go by bus it still takes 90 minutes as they do not use the motorway. Another error is the small article on Henry the German which gives the incorrect date for the battle of Varna and does not make it clear that the story is a legend and not known fact. The lay out is confusing with all the essential information at the back instead of the front where it should be. It is also quite repetitive with a separate where to have lunch and where to eat and drink section and numerous mentions of the cable car and sled rides presumably to fill up space without providing any more information.
Fortunately Madeira is a safe and friendly place but a better guide book probably would have saved us time, money and energy. Must try harder next time!
