Even though I had maps and guides to the parts of California where we were travelling, I found myself dipping into this book more often than any other to help plan my routes. The book is divided into areas of California, describes routes that drive you past all of the landmarks and scenery, and provides plenty of photographs.
Although it is designed for those who want to drive around with the occasional stop-and-wander, I found that planning my routes using the advice in this book made the journeys much more interesting and scenic. For example, I could navigate from San Francisco to Yosemite National Park, and then onto Kings Canyon using routes suggested by the book and we had a marvellous trip. An excellent travel guide.

In preparing for a California road trip, this book has been extremely useful. It offers a range of photographs to give a real sense of what each journey will 'look like' at different stages, it describes each notable location en route and, between descriptions, it describes the actual journey from place to place.
It includes as number of suggested journeys, but you can pick and mix parts of different routes to suit your own itinerary.
It has also been recently revised, in January 2007, and so is up to date.
A good buy.

I've only booked 2 weeks holiday in California for this winter but after reading this book I wish I had 2 months! It had great drives that takes you to the most fantastic places in California. I'm from Holland, but this book is really easy to read and makes you very enthousiastic.

Some suggestions of itineraries, though, you will still need to buy local maps or have a GPS !
