Product Description

Mini solar Car Features:

Worlds smallest solar-powered racer! This cool little racer needs no batteries, just power from the sun! This is a fun and educational way to learn about solar power. The solar cell used in the solar racer is a small version of the solar panels used on space satellites and space stations. The solar cell generates electricity from sunshine that drives a miniature motor that turns the wheels. These little cars can really move. Race against your friends it is great fun for all ages. My teenagers love them! The mini racers are small enough to go anywhere with a nice little carrying container. We even race them inside using small mag flashlights.

Very cute little gadget, but needs strong direct sunlight to move. I bought two for my husband at Christmas but will have to wait till summer to use.

At first there's not much "educational" to be seen in this toy. You shine a light on it (seems to work better than winter sunshine!) and it "go's".

But it one were to then talk about the science behind it - the basic circuit of cell to motor to cogs to wheels, you can see how it suddenly opens up a lot of conversation points.

Such as : What is torque? Why are there different sized cogs?

Then design considerations: Why are there lines of metal on the solar cell, why is the motor in a metal case? Why are the wheels rubber? Why is the axel metal?

There's lots for GCSE students too!
How do photons hitting the solar cell material make electricity (potential difference?), how is the electricity converted into rotational movement? Does deep purple light provide more electricity then red light - why?
Why are the magnets in the motor neodymium? What do they do?

Then you've got A level physics, and degree level: the lattice structure of the inorganic photovoltaic cells - considerations and improvements, interaction of the photons with the substrate - issues and problems, the flux density of the motor, and the calculations involved in calculating the torque given by the main motor axel... internal resistance, MTBF of the components, all great fun!

Also I don't know anywhere I can get small solar cells, and a mini DC motor for £1. They're great for the hobbiest kit. =)

I've bought 5. =)

Hopefully this will be well received by my son. Only problem is that it is so small. Keep it somewhere you know where it is!

Rubbish, doesn't work, don't waste you money. Have tried leaving it by a window, leaving it outside point a light at it, it never moved.

Nice design, but photovoltaic cells are very small and need direct sunlight to move. Even if you shine artificial light directly onto the vehicle (ie high intensity torch) it will not respond. Needs direct sunshine to operate. Cloudy skys -forget it.
