5.0 out of 5 stars 10 Years' Worth of Oversights! 11 Aug 2005
By Jim Gardner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Up to this point (1960) there had been published nine volumes of "The Best From Fantasy and Science Fiction." Robert P. Mills carefully examined the back issues and culled 40 stories which he felt should have been included in those volumes. Then he eliminated any which had appeared in ANY other anthology. The result is this thick, 416-page paperback.

5.0 out of 5 stars The finest collection of short stories, ever 28 Nov 2012
By Randal T. Murray - Published on Amazon.com
Without a doubt, this is the finest collection of short stories ever, regardless of genre.

I received my copy as a gift in 1978 and it has been a touchstone ever since. Among it's remarkable stories is my absolute favorite, "Spud and Cochise" by Oliver La Farge, but every one is a gem.

Get your hands on a copy.
5.0 out of 5 stars If you liked Avatar... 10 Mar 2012
By A. Mallory - Published on Amazon.com
I first read this anthology after it was released in mass paperback. Powerful stories. Powerful writing. Many of these stories have stayed with me for fifty years. That's a remarkable testament, I think.

The great unsung Robert F. Young closes the collection with the haunting "To Fell A Tree", elsewhere speculated to be the inspiration for the basic sensibility of the movie "Avatar". When I first saw the movie, that was my immediate thought! I even watched the credits to see if there was an attribution. (There wasn't.)

The list of contributors reads like a who's who of classic sci-fi. This excellent anthology transcends it's mid-century time period.

Highly recommended.
