Book Description

25 Jan 2011
There was an untold story, of a different walk to freedom, until a letter dropped to the floor.
It was written in 1980, by our Zulu gardener, offering consolation after my father's death, but I was only fifteen then, living an oblivious life. Such was South Africa at the time.
I picked up that Zulu's letter and read it again, realising that twenty-seven years had passed - as long as Nelson Mandela spent in prison.
Then the tears came, and the questions tumbled.
Who was that big Zulu man, and why did he care to write that letter to me? What were his dreams, and how did he have the strength to hope for so long?

More About the Author

John Jozef White's stories stem from rich experiences in the continents he has lived on, and the many wonderful people he knows.

Once a conscript, a geologist, a janitor, a sailor, a shipboard meteorologist, a contaminated sites specialist, and now a husband, father, surfer, fisherman and writer, living in Australia.

He writes about unsung heroes, ordinary people with hope and integrity, driven merely by the power of good to face their challenges.

After all, not everyone's gifted.

Product Description

From the Author

A Zulu Hope pays tribute to the strong, the loyal, and the faithful; the Zulu people that I once knew in South Africa.
It tells their unique story, of truimph over sheer adversity, and how they walked a different road to freedom.

About the Author

By the time I had vacuumed and mopped the ski resort restaurants, and scrubbed and disinfected all the toilets, the sun would be up. I'd go snowboarding for a few hours, sleep for a few more, and then it would be time for my waiter shift - until midnight - when my next janitor shift started.
When the snow melted my daughter was four months old. I knew I'd be laid off so I found another job and ended up going back to sea, but this time it had nothing to do with war. That was another life. I worked alone, releasing weather balloons, answering to satellites - cold, distant and intolerant bosses - and writing home.
Nine months of that was almost too much.
But the price of oil was down and unemployed geologists were congregating in the coffee shops in Vancouver, comparing resumes. Or they were moving to the United States because Superfund was in.
Twenty years later, after a thousand contamination plumes, via Los Angeles, and via Perth, I made it to Mossy Point and started writing.
A Zulu Hope is my first book, my first baby, the first wave of a set ... and you know how you never forget your first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved A Zulu Hope 1 Mar 2011
Loved the book John. Really makes you think about how we grew up so unaware of the personal lives of our servants, just took for granted that they were there, living in our back yards and catering to all our needs. After living in the US now for 25 years, it is hard to remember how we were ever so naive. Your book brought back a nostalgia, homesickness that I don't think will ever go away, no matter how long I am gone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A slice of history 28 Feb 2011
By ingenue
A view from the perspective of a person living through Apartheid. This book is a powerful reminder that we cannot be silent about injustice. It is important that these events not be forgotten. A fascinating read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling tale of endurance 2 Feb 2011
By EmJ
Everyone loves a hero. Julius Shange's strength of character, quiet tenacity, peace and endurance, even in the most unforgiving situations, tugs at the heartstrings and restores faith that good will prevail. A compelling read.
