Please help 14 Aug 2005
Format:Audio CD
this cd is indeed a fine way of getting to know opera since that it shows opera from its beginning in the barok period with Monteverdi til the romantic period with Puccini etc. I personally find it beeing a positive thing that the artist are in some ways less known since it gives the listener a chance to hear the pieces in its original form, where famous perfomers tent to change some pieces to fit there perfomence better. I however have a request, perhaps someone would have the quertesy of telling me whom is singing 'Ombra Mai Fú' cd 1 track 4 since the writtings in the folder that follows with the cd, clearly has mixed up the performes, thank you.

This is of course great as an introduction to opera and a good present in that sense. What I like best about compilations is that they can serve as introductions to a particular opera and open up enjoyment of works by new composers. What is also worth noting here is the quality of the perfomances which I think is extremely high. My favourite at the moment is track 15 CD1 by Bellini. It has inspired me to go and find other recordings from Luba Orgonasova who I had not heard of before now. Apparently she has a growing reputation. So it's really about discovering new operas, new artists and then realising that because it's Naxos you can go and buy a copy of La Sonnambula with Orgonasova!
Highly recommended.

This is a superb item. On the double CD there are very attractive performances of some of the mainstays of 38 operas. This is accompanied by a 762 page illustrated book written by Keith Anderson. The blurb says that this is:- 'The ideal companion for exploring the world of opera.' Believe it;- it is. You get plot synopses, background details and cast lists for hundreds of operas. There are thumbnail sketches of composers and there is a fine glossary of terminology. This product could be a special intro to opera and would make a gift for that musical friend who wants to know more about opera.
