Product Description

Product Description

Here at last is a comprehensive and indispensable guide to the Grand National, a monumental work of reference designed to settle all questions relating to the world's most famous steeplechase, while at the same time capturing the race's extraordinary wealth of drama and romance, of heroic triumphs and heart-breaking failures. With more than 600 entries, "A-Z of the Grand National" records every aspect of the race, from its beginnings in 1839 until the present time. It provides portraits of all its leading protagonists - horses, riders, trainers, owners and officials. At the same time, by way of statistical analysis and noted changes in the course and handicapping, it contains valuable information to guide the would-be punter.

Despite the fact that I only received delivery of this book this morning, I feel 100% justified in reviewing (and raving about) it! With Cheltenham races abandoned today, I've had plenty of time to dedicate to reading passages from it's 575 fact filled pages and my admiration for authors John Cottrell and Marcus Armytage in putting together such a fantastically detailed and well researched book is still growing! This book is quite simply a joy to 'dip into' and absolutely ESSENTIAL for anyone that has a regular interest in the Aintree showpiece. There are entries on all of the past winners of the race and details on just how they triumphed (and on what happened to them thereafter), so if you've ever been lucky enough to back the winner this book is sure to bring back happy memories. There are also interesting entries on some of the famous characters associated with the national (I've learnt all about Captain Beecher's life today for example) and profiles of many of the races winning owners too. I particularly recall good old Jim Joel (remember him?) who won the race aged 92 in 1987 with the 28/1 shot Maori Venture. The year before I had told EVERYONE to back his 'Door Latch' only (like poor Jim) to see it fall at the very first fence! Storytelling like this really is the essence of this book and you will soon find yourself laughing at your prior misfortunes, discussing old favourites and bragging about past gambling victories on the back of it. For the statisticians and punters interested in 'trends' there is even a full list of the first four home in every national, their ages, weight, odds and more at the back of the book so you might even be able to win the cost of the book back from the bookies in a few weeks time! So, what are you waiting for? As many a punter has said in many a betting shop across the land over the years watching the national, GET IN THERE MY SON! HA HA HA

This book is the most detailed story of the greatest race. It covers the race in digestible topics in alphabetical form. Being the official story may have meant they couldn't cover the most salacious or scandalous aspects but there quite simply is no other book that covers in such depth.
