Product Description

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe and Mad Men’s Jon Hamm are to star in a comedy drama about the Russian revolution on Sky Arts. The pair will play the same doctor at different stages of his life in the four-part series, A Young Doctor’s Notebook, by Russian writer and playwright Mikhail Bulgakov. Hamm will play the older man, who has a series of “bleakly comic” exchanges with his younger self, played by Radcliffe. Based on a collection of short stories, ‘A Country Doctor's Notebook’, by Russian writer and playwright Mikhail Bulgakov. draws heavily from the author’s own experiences as a medical graduate on the eve of the Russian Revolution, Bulgakov describes a young doctor’s turbulent and often brutal introduction to his practice in the backward village of Muryovo. Using a sharply realistic and humorous style, Bulgakov reveals his doubts about his own competence and the immense burden of responsibility, as he deals with a superstitious and poorly educated people struggling to enter the modern age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful 20 Dec 2012
What a gem this programme is. Dark, funny, and brilliantly acted. Daniel Radcliffe has really come a long way since Harry Potter; he throws off the Boy Wizard image fully in this 4-part series, which sees him smoking and taking drugs, amongst other activities Hogwarts definitely wouldn't allow. And credit where it's due- his acting is fantastic in this.

The entire main cast work brilliantly together to create highly watchable episodes, which range from the hilarious, to the disgusting, to the heartbreaking.

Die-hard fans of Mikhail Bulgakov will no doubt find many faults in this for not accurately portraying the book, but if you're looking for a dark comedy with plenty of gore, this is the show for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Sky Arts ! 19 Dec 2012
What a treat ! Having read the book just before the series came out I was very anxious to see how well it had been adapted to the screen. I must say this series had exceeded my expectations. There's a perfect balance of British humour and Russian comedy that is perfectly in keeping with Bulgakov's style and universe. It is fast-paced and highly intertaining, while retaining a certain theatricality that really pays tribute to the book. Highly recommended !

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark and hilarious mini-series 25 Feb 2013
By Daniel
A set of dark short stories set in middle-of-nowhere Russia, where a newly trained doctor tries to live up to the reputation of his predecessor - the great Leopold Leopoldovich - whilst battling a morphine addiction. Not only is it dark, but it's really funny! The script, the way it's shot, and the acting make it a delight to watch. I was curious about Daniel Radcliffe's reputed acting talents too (not particularly evident in the Harry Potter films, or Woman in Black), but he played his role brilliantly here.

There seemed to be a lack marketing for this program - the only reason I knew it existed was an advert of 4OD. It's a shame too, as I think there will be a lot of people missing out on an excellent series. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Judging by the 1st episode... 6 Dec 2012
By David Sandilands VINE™ VOICE
Very good and really quite amusing! Proving there is a life available to Daniel Radcliffe beyond Hogwarts, he plays the young doctor in question with convincing fear and trepidation (and great humour, of the Russian variety, naturally). The performances from the rest of the cast are equally as good in their own roles, giving balance to the whole affair. It's a fine romp , one I hope is maintained throughout the series. In fact , I'm minded to read the book ... if there's a good translation.

2.0 out of 5 stars Isolated doctors with no humanity.
Disappointing!. A great deal of negativity. No humor or cameraderie in their isolated hospital. Rather grim. Not uplifting in the slightest. A waste of money.

I have to admit that I was not sure if I was going to like this. However, it was very enjoyable and I'm liking watching the young Mr. Radcliffe stretch his acting wings.
