Product Description

Product Description

This is a large-format postcard book with rounded corners featuring 30 colour illustrations taken from "A Year in Japan" (Princeton Architectural Press, 2006) by Kate Williamson. Like the book, "A Year in Japan" stationery features the delicate, finely wrought colour illustrations from Kate Williamson. Combined with her whimsical observations on Japanese culture, the drawings document her year spent living there.

About the Author

After graduating from college, writer and illustrator Kate Williamson accepted a postgraduate fellowship that brought her to live for a year in Kyoto, Japan. While there, she documented in words and pictures the extraordinary people, places, and objects she encountered. These enchanting scenes from everyday Japanese life can be found in her first book, "A Year in Japan" (Princeton Architectural Press, 2006).

This is a really lovely set of postcards and every one is individual and unique. I have been using them to write letters, but I'm finding it hard to part with them!! Many of them have little snippets of information on the picture about Japanese culture.

Highly recommended and would also make an excellent present.

The postcards contained within this collection are excellent illustrations of everything from wonderful landscapes to the more mundane aspects of Japanese culture. The cards create a first impression of superlative quality, measuring 164x122mm each and printed on very high quality card. The corners have also been rounded, and the cards are not coated with a heavy gloss layer, so they don't feel tacky or cheap.

My one concern is the way the cards are attached to the cover they arrive in. Each card is gummed along the top (long) edge to the spine of the cover. This is just a little too strong for the cards to be removed easily, however, resulting in the cards getting very slightly warped as you peel them out. It only takes a second to smooth them out again afterwards, but it's still a slight annoyance. It wouldn't put me off buying these cards again, though!

Gorgeous postcards inspired by a gorgeous book! 25 Sep 2009

This set of postcards includes some of my favorite illustrations from "A Year in Japan" (the book itself is also highly recommended). I even saved some of these postcards to frame...they were just too lovely to send through the mail!

More of the same 2 July 2008
By A. Summers - Published on Amazon.com

If you liked A Year in Japan (the book), you will love this, because it's reproductions of the best parts of the book, in postcard form. I may never actually send any of these postcards because they're almost too beautiful to send.

A year in Japan without the packing. 2 July 2009
By M. Kistler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Cards
Flipping through this book is about as close as you can get to visiting Japan without visiting Japan. I avoid the word "reading" advisedly. This is not a book to settle with and go briskly through. It rewards leafing peacefully through Ms Williamson's watercolor views of odd or fun things she noticed during her trip.

She walks the line between the traditional Japan we westerners expect and the everyday face of the islands. For example, there's an account of lunch shared with an off-duty geisha, complete with diagrams of how to tell geisha from maiko. Yet, later we are given a portrait (from the back seat, of course) of an elegant but typical Japanese taxi.

I found this book charming and recommend it.
